This is a Vulture, taken through glass in "Dierenpark Amersfoort", A zoo.

Griffon Vulture - Gyps Fulvus

The Griffon Vulture is one of the largest birds. With its 6 to 10 kg weight, a height of 95 to 110 cm and a span that can reach 280 cm this bird is an impressive view. The bird has a sandy brown color and relatively short legs. It feeds on dead animals, only eating the muscle meat and viscera.
Central Asia is not the only place on earth where you can find this bird. You can find it in Central and Southern Africa, Southern Europe and Central and Southern Asia. It prefers barren areas with few trees, mountain steppes and high plateaus.

The griffon vulture is not teritorial and nests of several pairs can usually be found on nesting grounds. These are mainly cliffs, and rock caves. In most cases there is one egg. The little griffon vulture is born after 45 to 52 days which is unusually long for vultures. It remains in the nest for 4 to 6 months. They can live upto 40 years.

The griffon vulture is known as the friendliest and most social of all vultures. Pairs often mate for lifes. They also socialize with people. The social properties are also visible when a griffon vulture has found a prey. When one drops to the ground because it has seen a prey, vultures in the neighbourhood will see this and the birds will wait together near the prey for other animals to open the carcass. This weak vulture species is not capable to do this and it is dependent on stronger birds or mammals.

Great capture through glass Pieter,
The details are superb, very clean and clear.
Did you use a filter for this shot, to reduce the reflection of the glass?
Thanks for posting

Well done on this capture through glass. The composition is good however you have some white "hot spots" Not sure of the true color of this bird but the cyans are high.
Excelent portrait.
I tried a workshop for you.

Hi Pieter, very good work the exposure is great and the details are terrific, my only nit is that the head would look better against a clearer background. Very good work.

Threatening, formidable, dangerous and scary!
Great photo in great pose!
Thank you!

What a beak! Good details, pose and composition. As Paul mentioned, pity about BG. I like colour - white vulture.

Nice portrait, Pieter. The details shows well. It's very sharp, not easy through glass. The tip of the tail sticking out above the beak is a bit distracting but it's still a great capture.

Goed gedaan, vriend.

Pieter, believe me: I'm fascinated about these birds, and you did a great job here.

First of all, what grabs my attention is the fact you used 1/30. I wouldn't get such a good sharpness and focus by using it, since it seems you didn't use a tripod.

Beautiful composition, DOF, POV and note.

Congratulations.

Lívio

Hi Pieter
Pragtige aasvoël, a beutiful eye, good plumage.
I did a little WS for you. If you do not want me to give you proper crituques just say so, and I will stop.
The WS explains much better than I can of how you could turn this into somethig even better.

Callie

A very beautiful POV of this magnificent bird. This oen would be great to make a mask and replace the bricks of BG by a nice landscape. I like the whites palettes you captured. TFP.

Congratulations !

I see you've been back to the zoo, Pieter! Great capture, especially through glass. I am amazed at that brown eye, looks almost human.

Nice shot! Great sharpness and details. Thw reflections in the eye makes the bird look lively.
