Hello my TN friends,
I'm really tired of this neverending autumn and its humid gloomy atmosphere. That's why I decided to make a small colour explosion on you screens :-)

The flower is of course Red Poppy (Papaver rhoeas), a very beautiful, once very common, now retreating species in Poland.

It is known to have been associated with agriculture in the Old World since early times. It has most of the characteristics of a successful weed of agriculture. These include an annual lifecycle that fits into that of most cereals, a tolerance of simple weed control methods, the ability to flower and seed itself before the crop is harvested. Like many such weeds, it also shows the tendency to become a crop in its own right; its seed is a moderately useful commodity, and its flower is edible.

Its origin is not known for certain. As with many such plants, the area of origin is often ascribed by Americans to Europe, and by northern Europeans to southern Europe. The European Garden Flora suggests that it is ‘Eurasia and North Africa’; in other words, the lands where agriculture has been practised since the earliest times.

The leaves are mildly poisonous to grazing animals. The seed is harmless and is used sometimes as a condiment. The commonly grown decorative Shirley Poppy is derived from forms of this plant. The commonly used parts of the corn poppy are the seeds (in baking), the fresh green parts as vegetable, and the red petals by making syrups and alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks. Red poppy syrup is a traditional beverage of Mediterranean countries.

It has had an old symbolism and association with agricultural fertility.

It has become associated with wartime remembrance in the 20th century, especially during Remembrance Day in Commonwealth countries. As poppies bloomed in much of the western front in World War I, poppies are a symbol of military veterans, especially of that war.

In Poland there is also a very popular song "Red poppies on Monte Cassino" referring to the very costly series of four battles in World War II, fought by the Allies with the intention of breaking through the Winter Line and seizing Rome, in which Polish troops played a very important role, and many Poles lost their lives. Altogether, during the battles over 54,000 Allied and 20,000 German soldiers were killed.

Hi Michal!

Thanks for this deep red flower! Fortunatelly autumn isn't bad this year - still very 'hot', sunny and without snow. At this time you can find colours only on fungi, I think. I'm rather surprised that Red Poppy is retreating in our country. Anyway - very sunny and joyfull picture!

And don't try to use opium ;-)

Hi Michal, I'm sorry to tell you that winter is on the way up north!! So, sorry, get used to it... Greg keeps telling me how hot it still is...
But your poppy is bursting out of the pic with all its colourful petals. It's a beautiful composition, and I love the look of teh purple flower in the BG.

Hi Michal,
Very well composed flower-picture. I have a "faible" for poppies, whatever their colour. I like your notice, remembring also the polnish tribute in WW two.

Nice spring wind coming from the monitor to our faces. Great colors and details.

Hi Michael,
A beautiful composition of color. Nice to see on a cold grey winter day here. Excellent exposure has retained all of the detail in the Poppy. Beautiful OOF backround of rich green colors.
