Deep into my archives I founded this picture. It was taken at end of April, when everything started to bloom and life woke up after long and hard winter. Now circle of life turned again and we're ready for another frozen time of darkness. This is definitelly my favourite place in Lodz Botanic Garden. Area with small forest, hundreds of birds and flowers and no people. After rain this is molluscs' zone :-) I remember that that day I was walking during rain and founding many interesting snails and slugs. This one is biggest of them all - Roman snail.

Latin name: Helix pomatia

Size: Shell can be up to 5cms across

Food: Plant matter.

Habitat: Lime rich soils and chalk downland.

Life Span: Up to 10 years

Special features: This is Britain's largest snail, but the lack of fossil evidence of this species suggests that it may have been introduced. It was possibly brought here by the Romans as a source of food - hence the name.

The shell is very rounded, often white in colour with pale brown bands.

Roman snails mate on damp nights when the weather is cool. Mating can take several hours. It starts with the male and female circling each other and touching each others tentacles. Then they raise the front part of their bodies and press their soles against each other.

Hi Greg,

This place looks familiar to me. Well, not this exactly place, but the general sourroundings. I use to do walks in such habitats every springtime too.

Like I said, the photo has a very pleasant, "at home feeling" athmosphere.

Cheers, Petru

Hi Grzegorz, it's a very lovely place, great photo, it is not easy to make in the same photo one macro and to frame a beautiful forest, have a nice week end, ciao Silvio

Ricardo

Wow... great part of the composition is based on the wonderful point of view that you captured here my friend, where the environment is as important as the same snail.
Another excellent sample of your talent, with a portrait full with soft colors, soft textures and excellent framing.
My best greetings... Ricardo

I love seeing the ferns my friend. It looks like Mr Snail is walking down the path under them. It does look a lovely area to go - it could be parts of NZ!
Off on our holiday right now, so have a good week and we'll see you at Christmas...

Hi Greg,
Snail, fern, and forest floor are composed nicely to create a superb picture.
Excellent shot.

Ben Lakitan

Well done Greg.
At first I thought the title read "My Favourite Pace" ;) just kidding..
It's a very well done capture/comp, combining a mini-landscape, and insect macro rolled up into one. I like it.
Happy Holidays mf!

What a magical composition, my friend!
Another great example for why you love this place so much.
The perspective here is impressive and the DOF is magnificent, keeping good details even on the farthest elements from your frame.
Also, the colors here are very beautiful and alive, despite the wet and quite dark atmosphere - i like the vivid violets and greens.
Very good sharpness on the FG, excellent POV and framing.
Very well done, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

Gi Greg,
WOw, what a beautiful photo. Showing us this beautiful snail in is habitat. Such an excellent composed shot with a perfect DOF. Great colors and lighting and spot on sharpness.
This is so much different then the ordinary snail shots.

Hi there Greg. How have you been? This is a nice picture and the compotision is pleasing. I think I would have tried a lower pov, but it still is a very nice shot, with nice colors and a good exposure. I really like winters & freezing cold, but I think you don't, so I wish you all the best for the coming months!! :)
