Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus)
Family: Asteraceae

I think that this beautiful flower is familiar to everybody from Europe, and also from Australia and North America (where it was introduced by man). Not long ago it used to grow in crop fields in great numbers. I say "it used to" as now it's endangered with the herbicide treatments in many European countries - in UK it's almost extinct (source: Wikipedia).
Fortunately in Poland you may still find fields like this one, with untreated patches being home to bunches of cornflowers, poppies and other beautiful flowers. Let they last forever!

The Blue Cornflower is so popular that it became the national flower of Estonia and symbolizes daily bread to Estonians. It is also the symbol of the Estonian political party, Rahvaliit, and the Swedish political party, Folkpartiet. Also it was the favourite flower of German Kaiser Wilhelm I (source: Wikipedia).

Hi Michal,
Very nice off-centered composition. DoF is great, very sharp image, fine details, and neat blurry BG.
Excellent shot.

Hi Michal,
Great colors, exposure, details and composition. A beautiful flower that I never saw before. I agree with you that herbicides are killing lots of plants. Lovely WS too.
TFS, José M.

Very nice composition, POV and colours Michal. I also like frame. Good work!

Hi Michal,

Great blue tones on this delicate flower.
Endangered? I'm a bit surprised, for we have plenty and more than plenty of it here, in crops but also in lowlands sunny meadows every summer.

Cheers, Petru

Hello Michal,
very beautiful flower, one of my favorite flowers, too.
A bit of a pity it has been misused so much as a symbol for all kinds of avoidable nationalisms in many places of Europe, Germany and Austria included.
Its population seems to be recovering lately. I am fond to see them regularly in the cornfields to the north and to the east of Vienna. I love to see such a blossom again in midwinter in perfect recording from you on my screen.
With thanks, and best regards,

Bonjour Michal.

Ricardo

Very beautiful image Michal with a wonderful colors and a perfect contrast with the bottom of the scene.
I love the well uncentered framing and the correct illumination, with a good focus although the DOF perhaps is a little bits acarce.
Great presentation... thank you for sharing.
My best wishes... Ricardo

Beautiful picture. Nicely composed, good colors and great DOF. BG is prefect. I think I would have tried to remove the oof purple spot (another cornflower) and the yellow spot just behind the main subject. Tiny nits though! :)

Hi Michal,
Wonderful shot of one of my favourite flowers, that used to be very common in my childhood while rarely seen en masse now! I love the colour you've captured so well and especially against the very nice green background. Nicely
composed too.
Many thanks, Ulla

I love these cornflowers Michal, and have grown them once at home. This blue is so pretty - my favourite colour. I would love to see them growing wild in the fields, but all we have here growing wild is buttercups, dandelions, carrot-weed (not sure of it's name) and lots of grasses!
Have a happy NY and all the best for 2007,
