Imagine a hot, arid landscape. Semi-desert in fact. Grass among rocks, stones and gravel is yelllow and completely dried. Temperature is way up 30 centigrades. Almost no trees around, just typical Mediterranean makkia.

And then you go through the pass on the other side of these hills and in the valley you see a patch of green - true forest!!! You go there and see streams, you see water droping down from rocky slopes. Then you pass a trout aquaculture, the guard opens the gate for you and you go deeper in the valley. There's quite large river on your right, water is so blue and looks very cold. Few more minutes and you're below huge old platan trees.

You're there! It's Syri-i-Kalter.

The name is in Albanian and means "Blue Eye". See here (workshop 1), the name is more than appropriate. It is a spring, but what a spring!!!

It's 70 meters deep - can you imagine that!!!??? The water flows out with a speed of up to 8.8 cubic meters per second - it makes quite a river!!! And the temperature is stable at 9-10 centigrades.

The whole valley is amazing as well. It's cool there and many smaller springs are around, simply water flows from everywhere. There are huge trees, mosses, many birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. A true oasis in a very deserted landscape. We slept there (workshop 2) and it was unforgettable experience.

It looks like a remnant of a long gone world that existed in the southern Balkan Peninsula during the last Ice Age, some 11,000 years ago. That time when northern and central Europe was covered by ice, it was a mild climat here. A place where a large portion of biodiversity in Europe survived the harsh time and diversified. A true Garden of Eden.

But what a sad end came... the climate warmed up and became more arid, groundwater level dropped down. Then Greeks and Romans came and cut most of the forests - the water level dropped even more and the whole area turned slowly to what we know now.

But some small islands like this one survived... If you'll ever be in Albania, come there...

I went there to collect amphipods, nobody has ever done that before... and there were thousands of them... who knows what they are...

Hi Greg

Indeed is sounds and looks like a fairy-tail place. Simply charming!
The pictures (all 3 of them) are all great, and showing the beauty of this blace with all its aspects.
In this one here, i really like the game of light / shadows, with the rays of sunlight shining only on some branchaes and leaves.
The exposure is very nice here, the colors are a bliss and the details very nice throughout. A very beautiful composition.
I hope your studies pay-off and i wish you Merry Christmas and a everything at least twice better next year :)
Bravo and TFS
