A beech in the change of the seasons.

A season is one of the major divisions of the year, generally based on yearly periodic changes in weather.

In temperate and polar regions generally four seasons are recognized: spring, summer, autumn (fall), and winter.

In some tropical and subtropical regions it is more common to speak of the rainy (or wet, or monsoon) season versus the dry season, as the amount of precipitation may vary more dramatically than the average temperature.

In other tropical areas a three-way division into hot, rainy and cool season is used. In some parts of the world, special "seasons" are loosely defined based upon important events such as a hurricane season, tornado season, wildfire season or a sport season.

Beech (Fagus) is a genus of ten species of deciduous trees in the family Fagaceae, native to temperate Europe, Asia, and North America. The leaves are entire or sparsely toothed, from 5-15 cm long and 4-10 cm broad. The flowers are small single-sex, wind-pollinated catkins, produced in spring shortly after the new leaves appear. The fruit is a small, sharply 3-angled nut 10-15 mm long, borne in pairs in soft-spined husks 1.5-2.5 cm long, known as cupules. The nuts are edible, though bitter with a high tannin content, and can be called beechmast.

The beech most commonly grown as an ornamental tree is the European Beech (Fagus sylvatica), widely cultivated in North America as well as its native Europe. The European species yields a widely used timber, an easy-to-work utility wood.

Beeches are used as food plants by some species of Lepidoptera - see list of Lepidoptera which feed on Beeches.

The Beech Blight Aphid(Grylloprociphilus imbricator) is a common pest of beech trees.

The southern beeches Nothofagus previously thought closely related to beeches, are now treated in a separate family Nothofagaceae. They are found in Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, New Caledonia and South America.

I wish you Good Luck and Health in 2007.

Hallo Heinz,
splendid idea, and really well performed. What I like about the picture is that the POV is (or seems) exactly identical. You also choose a really beautiful Beech as object. Thank you for sharing this picture and I wish you all the best and more for 2007.

Well, it looks like we've made another full circle. This is a nice record of the year. I like the presentation very much.

All the best to you in the new year!

Hi Heinz,
Wonderful captures. You have managed to show the entire 2006 in one shot and interestingly the beech tree has obliged you by not growing much. The composition is just fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
A Happy New Year to you too.

Hi Heinz

A wonderful collage capturing all four seasons of 2006. Great thought and very well executed. All 4 photos were so close to be taken from almost the exact same spot. Probably the autumn shot (bottom right) showing the most variation. While we have seen some wonderful shots on TN this year that was created with time exposures thus creating all weird and wonderful effects, this one of course had the maximum shutter speed - by taking a full year to capture the shot (ha-ha-ha).

Since all 4 the composition are similarly well done so it is obvious that all 4 receives the same rating or do I have to say well done x 4. It is interesting to note the colour changes throughout the seasons. Winter almost looking like it’s a monochromatic (B&W) shot, spring showing the lovely greens of new growth, summer displaying the lovely flowering colours of the season, and of course autumn with its reds, browns, and yellows. Although the individual frames are quite small it is still clear that it displays ample details and that the exposure of each shot was well controlled.

Very good work my friend and TFS.

PS. Keep well and may you and you loved ones have a wonderful and fulfilling 2007, on or off TN.

Hello Heinz

A splendid presentation. Each shot is of high quality. Stunning work. :-)

Happy new year Heinz.
4 good seisons shot of the same tree, very nice presentation,
I hope that winter is not too long and that is would be a new seison for the butterflies and the dragonflies. That it would be a better year then last year for the butterflies.

Hello Heinz,
This is a very good idea and a beautiful post! Have a great year 2007 and I wish you many more beautiful pictures! Thanks,
