[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Originally, when I posted this butterfly as Small Heath - Coenonympha pamphilus. Apparently, according to two TN members, Argus and cataclysta, it is a Gatekeeper - Pyronia tithonus. I am not very good at identifying butterflies that are so similar. I admire those who have the dedication and knowledge.

A butterfly of open woodlands, hedgerows and lanes, the gatekeeper or hedge brown has a brownish-orange upper side with dark brown margins and a twin pupilled eye-spot. Males are brighter and have a dark band of scent scales on the forewing. Eggs are laid amongst tall grasses in lightly shaded places, usually beneath shrubs. The caterpillar is a fawn-brown or green colour and feeds on various grasses. Male: 37 - 43mm
Female: 42 - 48mm
It occurs widely across Europe to Asia Minor and the Caucasus, and also occurs locally in Morocco. It is declining in several European countries. The colour and patterning of the wings are very variable.

Hello Daniel,
Fine light and BG in this pretty sharp capture of P. tithonus, the Gatekeeper, not the Small Heath.
Nicely presented!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Superb shot.

c'est vraiment très réussi. On voit même la striation ans l'oeil. Et le papillon est petit et nerveux, je le sais. Il y a encore peu d'images de l'espèce sur TN. Félicitations. Merci d'avoir partagé e de joindre un bon text,

Good shot.

Excellent macro Daniel for the clearness and sharpness of the butterfly and their beautiful hanger.

I like it a lot: composition, lighting, background, POV, DOF, focus, sharpness, color, framing and PP.

I like it: notes.

I don't like it: nothing to quarrel.

Wonderful backdrop to enhance the beauty of the scene.
Hapy 2007!
