[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was taken about 5:00 in the morning in very low light. It was one of my first shots in that kind of light with that camera and lens. It was taken with 400mm lens and 800 ISO. Many of the first shots I took were very dark, as was this one. Of course this one I like the subject and composition even though there was almost more noise than picture! ManYee told me to post it anyway and it is kind of a neat shot...IMHO : ) I had to do a lot of noise reduction. It was fun trying to get shots of these great birds. I wish I had had a f2.8 lens though. I would take a few shots and walk 10 paces closer and take a few more and walk closer. They didn't fly off until I got really close.

SANDHILL CRANE FACTS:

• Sandhill cranes stand between three and four feet tall, weigh five to eight pounds, and have a wing span of six feet.
• Both sexes of adult cranes look alike. The reddish-brown color that some exhibit is the result of preening with beaks covered with iron-rich mud that stain their feathers.
• Cranes mate for life and often pair when they are three to six years old. Cranes do not compete for the same mate and sometimes have a lengthy courtship. Cranes eyes do not meet during courtship.
• A young sandhill crane is called a colt. It grows at a rate of approximately an inch a day, reaching full size in nine weeks. They are orange-brown in color for most of their first year, lack a red crown, and make a whistling call.
• Sandhill cranes can live to the age of 25 years in the wild and longer in captivity. One crane at the Washington Zoo lived to be 55 years old!
• Cranes utilize an elongated windpipe to produce "Crane Music." Their harmonious "bugling" and "trumpeting" sounds are actually distinctive calls to communicate with each other.
• Cranes have much better hearing and sight capabilities than humans.

CRANE LORE:
• Cranes are the oldest living bird species and have the longest successful tenure on earth, about sixty million years. They are truly "emissaries from a distant age."
• Sandhill cranes probably get their name from the sandhills of Florida where they were first described by John James Audubon.
• Cranes are considered the most accomplished dancers in the animal kingdom

Wow. This is an amazing capture, Evelynn. Great composition, too. Technically, it seems amazingly crisp. You got 1/800 in low light -- that's pretty great, even at 800 ISO. Great details in the feathers and in the grass. I don't see much noise, but there does seem to be some artifacts in the green area. Did you run this through a noise filter?

I like sharpness, composition, pov and poses a lot.

so this is what you was talking about.
A nice picture with nice warm colours and quite good details. I like the POV and pose too.
But why 800 ISO, you could lower the ISO to at least 400 ISO or lower, you had room for it.

what a great display of the cranes. Allways a magnificant sight, but what I really like in your image is the colours and light. Soft tones and not too high contrast. There is some jpeg artrefacts in the green parts but that's just minor. Compliments,

Great title for this one, Evelynn.
This shot is really a spirit-lifter.
I love those cranes, and the movements.
Cannot help but break into a big smile.
I think the details are quite fine,
and the cranes show up really well against the BG, especially the yellow grass.
Love the warm colors.

Great photographer + great camera = great photo ! Sincerelly I like this superb action shot. The different "poses" of the birds are nice.
I am surprised that you had noise at 800 iso, with my 350D noise is invisible at this value...

Hi Evelyn,
Though it would have been nicer to have had an entirely grassy BG I would have jumped for joy if I had taken this shot. This is sharp and is a nice action shot showing typical crane behaviour. The ISO 800 is not noticeable.

well ive never seen anything like this before, what a cracking shot.
you may have done quite a bit of noise reduction but the lighting and the detail is great. what makes the picture for me is the way you have caught the one at the back in mid jump, head above the rest, love it

Maravillosa y divertida escena Evelynn con la exacta velocidad para congelar la imagen en plena acción.
Me gustan los colores captados con buen desenfoque y contraste con el fondo.

ManYee was right. This is sure TN material. Eventhough the noise removal has deleted some of the details surrounding the birds. the moment and the details in the birds are perfect. I just love the different poses you captured.

Regardless on th ISO setting, the image is still fantastic and passes with flying or hopping colors in my book. When I met Laurie I would do the same courting ritual with her by hopping up and down like the cranes, to this day I now have 4 kids all the hopping paided off. :)
