I am sure we have all seen the Meerkat stories (Meerkat manor) on Discovery Channel or Animal Planet, where Flower is the ruler of the pack. Who knows he/she might be a far relative of Flower.

Anyway, I'm going through my archive again and found this one from my first zoo trip with the borrowed lens. When I saw the photo, I immediately remembered that this guy was all alone. Non of his family members was out and about. I guess it had to do with the temperature.

I'v been trying to find some original information on the Meerkat i.o. the regular wiki info. Then I figured that maybe some people do not know the show, so here some information about Meerkat Manor:

Meerkat Manor is a soap opera with a difference – the main characters are 12 inches high, live underground in burrows and survive on a diet of worms, insects and lizards.

This ground breaking series, narrated by Bill Nighy, follows a group of meerkats living in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. From family squabbles to love affairs, Animal Planet presents a detailed portrait of these curious and entertaining creatures as never seen before. We'll get to know each individual character as intimately as any human soap star but here the relationships, births, deaths and conflicts are for real.

In cooperation with Cambridge University, the story of the Whiskers mob is told from the perspective of the meerkats themselves. With no humans featured, film crews were housed in specially built sheds and, for the first time, successfully filmed inside a meerkat burrow using fibre-optic cameras.

Shot in RAW, adjusted white balance and exposure. Converted to JPEG. Levels and curves. Frame and USM.

Hello Niek,
I like a lot this portrait of the Meerkat, it seems he is posing to you in a very subtle and delicate way.
DOF works pretty well with this blurred background.
Colors, saturation and details are good ones.
Well done,
JM

Hello Niek,

Hola Niek.- Que bella pose de este pequeño, muy atento al lente de tu camara. Bellos colores muy naturales. Saludos Luis52.

Hello Niek!
Beautiful expression of the meerkat on this picture! Great sharpness and the background colors fit to the composition. Usually I am not fan of frames, but yours is discreet and doesn't oppress the picture.

Hi Niek

Sure i know Flower and her family and this photo definately reminds me of them :) I enjoy watching them and their interesting habits and behavior, just as much as i enjoy watching this picture :)
The composition here is simple but effective, the focus is impeccable and the details are clear and sharp (as always :) )
I like the DOF and also the colors, that, together, isolate the meerkat very clearly from the BG.
The exposure is great and the framing very nice, too!

Bravo and TFS

Hallo Niek,

Hello Niek,
I love Meerkat and I don't know why. Maybe it is because this very mischievous expression they always have. I think that they look very wise and intelligent too but I never had the chance to see one :-) This is a great capture of this cute and funny little creature. I like this eye contact and details.

I have never heard about "Meerkat Manor" but I'm sure that I would love this series; I really enjoyed reading your notes about it. TFS,
Claudine

What a sweet portrait this is. One has to love meerkats. I'm not familiar with Meerkat Manor as I gave up watching TV six years ago. I am a "radioholic" though. I know we get the Discovery Channel so I'll try to check out your program. This uploaded lighter and softer than when I put it on my desktop...I HATE that. Electronic submissions to my photo club are to be 350kb. That might make the difference. I like your photo and note. Thanks for sharing both.

What a cutie, Niek.
I wonder why its fur is all fluffed up.
Great eye contact, perfect exposure, and very sharp details.
This meerkat is chubbier than most others I have seen in zoos or on TV.

Hi Niek.
Nice shot of this cute animal. Composition of your picture is really excellent and suitable for your model so much. Nice pose, fine expression of the face, impressive low POV and excellent defined DOF. I like very nice BG perfect blurred and nicely coloured also as well as the skilful cropping and touching note. Perfect job and my compliments.
Alexei.

Beautiful portrait, Niek. Well done. I especially like the pose and expression. You can see why we think they are curious critters. It is a tidge soft, but I've found that 5.6 doesn't make for the crispest image, especially on longer lenses.

Hi Niek

I missed this photo first time around, but I definitely do not miss the continued saga of Whiskers and her mob from the "Meerkat Manor".

Although the clever people with the thin arms and thick spectacles says that the word "meerkat" is probably derived as a misnomer from the Sanskrit word "markata" which means "monkey", but you as a Dutchman obviously recognised that when directly translated the Afrikaans or Dutch word "meerkat" means "more cat". So probably the name says it is "more cat than dog". However, what makes this a little more interesting or maybe even confusing is the fact that meerkats belong to the Mongoose (Herpestidae) family which is a family of cat-like carnivores, but in Afrikaans a mongoose is a "Muishond" which directly translated would mean "mouse dog". So, after all; is it a cat, a dog, a monkey, or even perhaps a mouse? Talk about an identity crisis.

Anyway, I like this zany fuss ball assuming the typical meerkat pose. Personally I would have left a little more space on the right since the animals body is facing that way, but actually the composition is fine as it is. The colours are great and very natural and the details are sharp and well defined. I’m not sure if this little guy is slightly squint (did it make eye contact or is it looking past you at something on your left), but you captured nice little catch lights in the eyes. The BG is well OOF and complimentary and the exposure was spot-on.

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot
