Another post of Plain tiger shot some time back.

Large and conspicuous, the plain tiger butterfly is a member of the monarch butterfly family.

Unpalatable to predators owing to the toxic diet of its caterpillars, it is faithfully mimicked by an unrelated butterfly, the diadem.

It readily drinks nectar, especially from natural desert flowers, but opportunistically also takes in salts from damp soils.

Striking patterns signal danger

The plain tiger butterfly is a rich, honey brown colour, with jet black tips on the forewings broken by a prominent white bar.
This vivid pattern, coupled with its slow flight, would seem to present an easy target for birds. In fact, its bright colours are a strong warning, and the leisurely flight is designed to ensure that birds notice the colours. Experiments have revealed that captive birds quickly learn to avoid eating plain tigers and apparently transmit this knowledge to other birds. Though a few plain tiger butterflies do get killed, their sacrifice protects the rest of their family - since the birds will never touch another plain tiger.

Nectar and other nutrients

As with most butterflies, the plain tiger is strongly attracted to flower nectar. Other nutrients may also include minerals and salts obtained from damp patches of earth.

Hi Pankaj

What a lovely splash of colours this butterfly and the lovely flower created.

It is a good composition and although the flower stem comes up right on the ˝-way mark of the vertical plane and the bloom is in the dead-centre of the shot the main thing is that the monarch sits cosily towards the left side of the photo where it fills the frame. The colours are stunning and well saturated, the details are really sharp (especially on the butterfly), the dark BG is complimenting the subject (unfortunately the antennae disappeared somewhat), and the exposure was spot-on.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Pankaj,
This is another fine presentation in your Plain Tiger series and I can't really fault it, with the POV and composition being the best aspects. I think it was wise to leave the green bit at the bottom, otherwise one would have been overwhelmed by orange.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Bella macro Pankaj con intensos y saturados colores, gran luminosidad (tal vez ligeramente elevada) y agradable punto de vista, en combinación con el encuadre elegido.
El desenfoque del fondo realza la belleza de la escena.
Gracias y saludos... Ricardo

Beautiful macro Pankaj with intense and saturated colors, great brightness (perhaps slightly high) and pleasant point of view, in combination with the elected framing.
The out of focus of the background enhances the beauty of the scene.
Thank you and regards... Ricardo

Hi Pankaj, this is a beautiful shot of this Tiger (Monarch). Your composition is very good and I especially like the bright orange theme against the green in the picture. I had a quick look at your portfolio and you have a lot of beautiful butterfly shots.
