Hi all

Sorry I have not been around, been sick for over 3 weeks now, having a nasty fight with the flu. So I have not been out much to take any shots. In fact this was in from the archive, taken December 30th. Anyways my setup and stats are listed, will get out to see you all soon. Oh, I almost forgot,I also launched a new website, http://www.supernaturephotos.com, I have been working on this site everyday for the last month trying to set it up just right.

Bewick Wren

Discussion: Bewick's Wren uses its long, narrow, slightly down-curved bill for scavenging on the ground and picking in crevices for insects and spiders. Searching for food, it may venture into hollow trunks, rock crevices, or barns. Bewick's Wren was named by Audubon for Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), the English naturalist and engraver. Although this species resembles the somewhat larger Carolina Wren, it has an entirely different song and, at close range, shows white in the outer tail feathers.

My setup when shooting:

1. This was shot at afternoon, around 2:00 pm. Skies were clear with clouds and it was warm.
2. I used a tripod from within a 2 man hide.
3. Setup the branch, loaded peanut butter and seed on the backside.
4. Used the Nikon 70-200mm lens with TC.
5. Sat back inside the hide and waited.
7. Kept adjusting the Shutter Speed and Aperture to compensate for the alternating light patterns coming through the trees, clouds and sun.

Camera Settings:

Location: Middletown, Delaware (Backyard)
Special Equipment: N/A
Processing: Saturation, levels and contrast.
Weather: Some clouds, shot in the shade, time 14:00.
Tripod : Yes
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens : Nikon 70-200mm with 1.7x TC
Focal Len : 340mm
Flash : No
Exposure Mode : Manual Mode
Metering Mode : Multi Pattern
Exposure : 0
Shutter : 1/160
F Stop : F 9
ISO : 200

Very beautiful shot Gregory. Overall sharpness is perfect on the subject that sets nicely on the OOF background, I also love the side profile shot of this sporty looking passerine. :)

Wow, Greg... That shot is exquisite.
Those wrens are so small and so quick.
You did a fantastic job of capturing it with super sharp details, beautiful colors and markings, and in a gorgeous, gorgeous composition.
TFS this artistic masterpiece. : )
Happy New Year to you and yours.

Hello Gregory !
This is a great picture ! Excellent sharpness and details, beautiful natural colors, wonderful composition and BG. I also like the pose of the bird on his branch, and the white frame which fits the picture very nicely. Well done !

Hi Greg

I'm very sorry to hear you've been sick! The flu also has many victimes here, too, this time of the year :( Hope you'll get well soon!!! :)
I've checked your site and it looks wonderful! Keep up the great work! :)
Regarding the picture itself, it again a splendor!
The way you maanged to get there cute bird to pose for you is simply fantastic.
I'm also impressed by the way you get to shoot them with no distracting branches in the front of the subject and anywhere near for that matter :)
The details are superb, very clear snd sharp, the natural colors are most charming and the light is great here.
I also like the POV and the DOF chosed, which isolate the little wren from that lovely blurred BG.
Congrats!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Gregory,
Wonderful capture of this cheeky, hard-to-get bird! You've got him in a lovely pose, in excellent sharpness and great colours. Beautiful background too. A composition really admirable!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Gregory,
This is really good stuff...
What a wild life location...your backyard:-).
This peanut butter must be really tasteful:-)
Really too crazy picture...
I'm going to visit your site..no doubt.
Congrats
Annick

Hello Gregory,

What a wonderful and high quality work of art! I wasn't able to find a nit on this picture. I like the way you composed the image. Positioning the subject just below the center against this beautiful soft background is very effective. The bird and the branch stand out clearly and are rendered very sharply. Excellent details in the subject too! The natural colors and especially the very good contrast makes the picture almost real! It is one of the best bird pictures on TN!
Technically I can't find anything wrong. Focus was achieved very accurately and exposure is perfect, with no detail loss due to under or overexposure. The light was very well handled. I appreciate the area around the eye is well lit and the catchlight in the eyes make the bird look alive.
Another strong point of this image is the pose of the wren. It is a positive thing to be able to read the silhouette against the background. The bird showed you a very beautiful profile which you captured perfectly.
I like this delicate and classical frame you constantly use in your work. It conveys a very select look to your photos.
Your note is very useful to members who want to learn. I appreciate the part where you described the shooting setup and camera settings. It is an excellent post. Well done! Thanks!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Another great capture Greg with your accustomed personal touch... warm colors and clearness.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, focus, sharpness, color, lighting, background, framing, notes.

I like it: frame (something thick for my taste)

I don't like it: nothing to quarrel.

Excellent presentation with the ideal POV... thank you for posting.
Best regards... Ricardo

Hello Gregory,
I see you making comments today and I said to myself, let's see what kind of great picture he took recently and then I saw this little wonder! I don't know if it is possible but I might have seen this bird in a park near home. I don't know if they live here though but it was very similar and sang very loud, louder than any bird I ever heard signing... Your pictures are always the best quality we can imagine. Details, composition, POV, DOF and exposure are perfect again with this beautiful framing that is very typical to your style. I must try this peanut butter trick someday; thanks for sharing with us these useful tips!
