[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the Blue leaf beetle (Chrysomelidae: Chrysolina coerulans; Himmelblauer Blattkäfer; Chrysomèle bleuâtre) that has gone astray: it is usually found on our Wild mint (Mentha sp.) but here it is clearly looking for pollen on the Cherry tree. Larval development takes place on mint leaves.
Such beetles take part in a Müllerian mimikry ring: all blue or green-metallic looking chrysomelid species live on plants that provide bitter or smelly compounds to the beetles, making them distasteful to birds. The signal "I am nonpalatable" is the metallic colour.

I took the pic not with a ring flash as I said first, but with the sunlight . I cropped the pic, lightened the beetle in SP and applied blur to the dark grainy background. I know, the background should not be pitch dark, I wait for springtime to do a better job.

Hello Dietrich,
I think I know this little fellow, hard to capture due to the metallic sheen. Excellent sharpness and colours and I like your composition. I agree about the black background but there isn't much of it here.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Good sharp image, well composed and great sharpness
well done

salut mon cher dietrich

exellente photo, superbe

Hello Dietrich,
Stunning the metallic color of the insect!
It makes a great and vibrant contrast with the green of the leaves.
A very good POV used here, I like a lot the bright reflection of light on the insect and the way it vanishes creating a whole tonal range of blues.
Well done and thanks for share,

Hello Dietrich,
very nice composition, POV, colors and details are wonderful.

Interesting composition with the blue beetle and the surrounding foliage including the OF white blossoms, Dietrich.
The subject is in focus and the colours are very pleasing to look at.

Hallo Dieter,
