The Great Eggfly [Hypolimnas bolina]

Thanks to Peter [batu] for helping me with the ID of this butterfly

The Great Eggfly is a black bodied butterfly with a wingspan of about 7–8½ cm. The species has a high degree of sexual dimorphism. The female is mimetic with multiple morphs.

Male: The upperside of the wings are jet black which is offset with 3 pairs of white spots. 2 on the forewing and 1 on the hind. These white spots are suffused with purple. In addition the upperside of the hind wing bears a series of small white dots.

Female: The upperside of the wings of the female is a brownish black and do not have any spots like those of the male. The edges bear white markings which are similar to the Common Indian Crow.

Great Eggflies are found in Madagascar in the west through to South and South-East Asia and occurs in parts of Australia, Japan and New Zealand.

The Great Eggfly is a fairly common butterfly found in lightly wooded country, decidous forests, thick and moist scrub and the greener parts of human habitation.

Great Eggflies are known for maternal care with the females guarding leaves where eggs have been laid. They are also very territorial. The female hovers over a plant to check for ants which will eat her eggs. After selecting a plant which has no ants on it, she lays a single but often 2 - 5 eggs on the undersides of the leaves.

Hi Ben

Wow, what a beautiful butterfly. Slightly smallish perhaps in the frame, but nevertheless very nice.

Although the BG is not totally OOF it is sufficiently soft and non-distractive. However, it gave a lovely effect to see this butterfly in a natural setting and due to the colour differences the insect still stand out very well. The colours are splendid, the details are sharp and the exposure is well balanced.

Well done and TFS.

Hello Benyamin,
Nice natural surroundings. Great color tone and overall view. Well done and clearly seen picture. TFS.

Hi Benyamin,

Hello Benyamin,

Hello Benyamin,
What a wonderful butterfly - it almost looks as if he's flying here. I like the colours, the background and the composition very much. A bit soft on focus or have you used NeatImage all over?
TFS and regards, Ulla

Ricardo

Beautiful composition Ben where the butterfly is only part of the same one.
I like the captured point of view although I had preferred a framing with the insect more below inside the same one.
Intense colors well controlled, with good OOF of the bottom of the scene with appropriate focus and brightness.
The so loaded frame distracts the attention on the picture, but as always it is only a personal opinion.
A cordial greeting from Buenos Aires... Ricardo

Hi Ben.
Refined specimen was pictured by you. Amazing colour tones and beautiful shapes. Whole scene is very nice and rich. Details of sharp object are great as well as the impressive blurred BG. I like lighting and exposure of the shot. They are very nice too. My compliments and TFS.

Hi Ban

This is a wonderful photo!
The colors and patterns on this beautiful butterfly are gorgeous and very well saturated, but i think here the DOF is the key element - it's really great and only a f-stop of just 2.8 coulf have isolated the subject so well and blurred that rather difficult BG so well.
Also the exposure is very well managed and teh vertical composition work like a charm. :)
Nicely framed and presented, too.

Bravo and TFS

Una captura preciosa. Los colores son estupendos y no conocía esta mariposa antes. Agradable punto de vista y presentación.
Hasta pronto, JL.

This is a much more spectacular Eggfly than the one I shot in India last summer, Ben. I too posted another image of it today.
This is a beautiful capture and I like the wide foreground of vegetation you have left intact within the frame. It gives a different kind of perspective and depth to this lovely image.
Warm regards,

Benyamin, this is very beautiful.

Colors galore all around.

I like composition and saturation too.

Hi Ben,
An excellent shot on this Great Eggfly. The colors are beautiful. Nice detail. I would maybe crop it a little tighter to eliminate some of the backround. Looks great though.

Hi Benyamin,
This shot is very effectful the way it creates space and airiness around the butterfly peacefully moving around in its world of plants and flowers as if "floating" freely, enjoying its paradise and being totally unaware of everything else! The colours of the butterfly are just perfect with those white "brush" strokes against the solid black bottom and the fiery orange spots braking through like lanterns in the night. Thank you very much for a very tranquil and soothing portrait of this lovely butterfly and the accompanying note!
With best regards,

Hi Benyamin,
