European Robin

The European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family, but is now considered to be an Old World flycatcher, Muscicapidae. European Robins and similar small European species are often called chats.
The European Robin is a common European songbird. It is 12.5 - 14.0 cm (5.0 - 5.5 inches) long and it is known for its pugnacious behaviour despite its small size. The distinctive red patch on the chest of both sexes led to its original name of redbreast. In the fifteenth century, when it became popular to give human names to familiar species, the bird came to be known as Robin redbreast, which was eventually shortened to robin.
Robins have a fluting, warbling song in the breeding season. Robins often sing into the evening, and sometimes into the night, leading some to confuse them with the Nightingale. Both males and females sing during the winter, when they hold separate territories, the song then sounding more plaintive than the summer version. The female Robins move a short distance from the summer nesting territory to a nearby territory that is more suitable for winter feeding. Male Robins keep the same territory throughout the year.
Robins build a neat cup nest in crevices, holes or artificial sites such as discarded kettles. When juvenile birds fly from the nests thay are all brown in colour and do not have a red breast. After 2 to 3 months out of the nest, the juvenile birds grow some reddish feathers under their chins and over a further 2 to 3 months this patch gradually extends to complete the adult appearance.
The Robin is well known to British and Irish gardeners: it is relatively unafraid of humans and likes to come close when anyone is digging the soil, in order to look out for earthworms and other food freshly turned up; when the gardener stops for a break the robin might use the handle of the spade as a lookout point.

Hello Sebnem,
It sure is nice to take full frame pictures with great composition. It is a very nice and serene image with beautiful dark background. The 500 is a wonderful lens in combination with the 30D. Unfortunatly I haven't had many occasions to try it, but I hope for a better time this spring. And also hope to see more of this nice images.
Best regards, Jacob

Great full frame shot! Great background too, nice and neutral, letting the robin take center stage and the colors really stand out. Excellent colors too! Well done.

Hello Sebnem,
With this zoom you have, who needs to crop :) This is a beautiful capture of this little bird THAT I DON'T HAVE HERE :) This clarity is amazing for ISO 800. I just think that the BG is a little grainy though. When it happens, I use Neat Image and I applied it only on the BG. In fact I do it with most of my picture as PP often creates noise or grain. I like those tones of colors here Sebnem and I think that the fact that it was a rainy day makes those colors very contrasted. This is a beautiful post with excellent details, POV and composition. How come everyone in the world seems to have this bird except me? Thanks,

Ricardo

Dainy capture Sebnem with excellent details and textures of the plumage of the animal enhanced by the obtained bokeh.
The correct focus and the soft illumination collaborate to create a very pleasant atmosphere with aesthetic point of view and framing, showing the branches with their pending drops like part of the scene.
Good PP work where the noise of used ISO800 is not perceived.
A cordial greeting from Buenos Aires... Ricardo

What a gorgeous, colorful little bird Sebnem! I always thought robins were red, this fellow has a lot of blue. He's nice and fat too!

Well seen, great composition.

Merhaba Sebnen,
It's amazing the good detail and sharpness got with that focal lenght, specially on the bird's feathers.
Great POV, DOF, exposure, and like a lot the composition used.

Hi Sebnem.
First of all thank you for detailed and very useful note. I like technique details so much.

You have used the ISO 800 boldly and effectively. You have got nice picture at bad light conditions. This one is perfect too: reflection of the mood of the soaked bird, excellent colours and details, nice composition, created by inclined twig, etc. Bravo and my best wishes.

Hello Sebnem,
We have been seeing quite a bit of robins on TN lately. It is a distinct looking bird with that patch of orange on the chest.
What makes this picture stand apart is your superior technical acumen in addition to your discerning eye as an artist. The way the subject has been framed against a given BG is not something that came off accidently; it is a well thought out selection which has done wonders to this beautiful creation. Quite obviously, no cropping was required as you mention in your note.
I repeat my words once again when I say that your pictures are worth waiting for.

Magníficos detalles Sebnem. El petirrojo parece resignado aguantando el chaparrón. No sólo has capturado una situación sino que creo has fotografiado un estado anímico. En el fondo, parece sonreir...
Saludos amiga, Juan Luis.

HI Sebnem,
10-12m...I'm thinking:-) Quite a distance...
1,4 teleconverter is maybe better than the 2x...who am I to tell.
The sharpness is great: 1/80 sec...is the stabilizer working or not!;-)
Composition is wonderful.
I love the image.
Though a little nitpicking (an English word I learned from Howard;-):
Strange nobody mentioned the purple color(cast?) in the image? But maybe my screen isn't calibrated very well;-).
I'm really glad you managed this big lens so well:-)

hI Şebnem

This is too cute for words so I'll say nothing more... Ha-ha-ha, as if anybody really thought I could manage to do just that.

Everyone just have to love this little fluff-ball as it was brilliantly captured and presented. I think the two most important aspects that gave this shot its visually impact is the perfect 'lighting' and the amazingly complimentary 'BG'. Of course all the other elements aided because without the fabulous composition, the stunning colours, the razor sharp details, or the captivating pose it would not have had the same impact, but thrown together made for a 'wow' result. I am totally impressed with the quality of the shot considering that it is a small subject that was taken with a 500mm lens with a 1.4x converter. Even though it was shot from a tripod I still think the sharpness is remarkable.

Great work and TFS.

PS. Sorry I took so long to update my critique, but I don’t know what’s going on here in South African. For the second time this week more than ½ of the country had a total black-out that lasted almost 7 hours. After the power was restored the Internet still remained unavailable and I don’t know what time last night it came back on-line, but at least this morning everything seems to be fine again.

WOW...this is impressive...if not for the bird (which is very beautiful) or the place (which i'm sure is great) but for that imense focal length...now that's something you don't see everyday on TN.
The sharpness achieved here desite that length is most impressive, the colors are charming and the DOF is wonderful.
Nice POV and composition as well.

Saludos Sira

HI Sebnem!
Wonderful shot of this cute birdie,
perfect details,compo and lighting,
phantastic colors and DOF,superb shot.

Hi Sebnem, well its a gem. I just love the robin and I can see its very similar to the UK variety. Great placement in frame and good details of the pens. Very nice work.

STUNNING. I know this is not a recent pic but I think it deserves to go above 200 points easily.

o anında yakalamak anlamlı ve güzel olmuş tebrikler...

Hello Sebnem,

It was hard to decide which photo to write a critique for, because all your pictures are outstanding. I picked this one because of the difficult conditions it was taken under. In spite of the rain and hence the dim lighting conditions, you made a brilliant capture of this fluffy robin. I "envy" you for being able to shoot such a small subject from 10-12 m. With my 200 mm lens I have to get as close as 2 m for a similar shot.

Several elements make this composition outstanding: the placement of the subject, the distribution of the empty space, lack of distracting objects, plain background to isolate the bird and a great pose of the robin with excellent eye contact.

Although the colors look at their best in appropriate light, you captured natural and well saturated colors in the robin.

Contrast was well adjusted for a shot taken in dim conditions.

Very good camera work to capture the bird in dim light. The use of a tripod was mandatory for the success of this shot and the high ISO setting allowed a short enough shutter speed to freeze the movements of the bird. The catch lights in the robin's eyes are great!

The sharp focus on the bird rendered excellent details in the plumage. The background was also well controlled by using large aperture.

A great post with very informative notes. Thanks for sharing!

With Friendly Regards,

Hi Sebnem,
Outstanding shot of this cute Robin shaking its plumage after the rains. Very impressive sharpness and details on its plumage and lovely colours with spot-on focus. Superb BG and it highlights the subjects well. I like the water drops hanging from the branches and the sweet pose. Excellent POV to portray it and very nicely composed. Kudos.

What a beautiful shot! You should be proud of this one.

Bonjour Sebnem,

Gorgeous portrait of a most beautiful bird. The color, detail and overall balance of the composition are wonderful. The note is very informative, as I did not immediately recognize this as a Robin. Well done.

Merhaba Sebnem.Delightful little bird captured so clearly> Its breast colours stand out attractively against the greyish background and the wet look of the branches. Superb details. Cok guzel. Selamlar. Klaudio.

Hello Sebnem,
Excellent close up on this Robin. Sharpness, pov, dof, exposure are great. Texture and fine details are clearly seen. Best regards Siggi

Lovely shot. The rain drops on the branches add a dramatic effect to it. I only wish you had aimed one centimeter lower. Still I think it is excellent!!!
