CJ's Desert Dwellers: Red-Tailed Hawk Buteo jamaicensis

Family: Accipitridae
Length: 475 cm (19 in)
Wingspan: 1475 cm (49 in)
Weight: 1080 g (2.4 lb)

ID NOTE: These hawks are common and widespread. The Southwestern subspecies is pictured here- Occurs in Arizona and is defined by a uniform dark upperside, pale underside with few streaks and pale tail. Sexes are similar with the female being slightly larger of the two. An adult bird is featured here. The juveniles have a pale underside and a pale, grayish tail that might show some banding (then, again, it might not!) The black or dark patigial bar that is very evident on the forewing is a dependable identifying mark.

Red-Tailed Hawks Buteo jamaicensis tend to use the same sentinal/hunting perch day after day and this guy is no exception. They feed primarily on small mammals, rodents, and the occasional small bird.

Much variation occurs in coloring of Red-Tailed Hawks Buteo jamaicensis. With Arizona being a wintering ground for many raptors, we see most of the 'western' variations in our area.

Buteos are large, carnivorous birds that typically soar high in wide circles. They tend to be stocky and broad with rounded wing feathers and short tails.

Voice: Alternately described as a rasping whistled scream cheeeew or an asthmatic squeal keeeeeer falling in pitch and intensity. (In television commercials in the USA, you'll often hear the Red-Tailed Hawks' call paired with a bald eagle)

Lamentablemente no permites hacer un Worshop de tu trabajo, por lo que es imposible optimizar el errado color del cielo.
