Though it was 7 degrees below and blowing a cold N. wind, the sun was shining and we decided to take a little short tour in the car.

We stopped by a group of alders in the sun and out of the wind. Sure enough, as hoped, there was a flock Siskins (Carduelis spinus) energetically feeding on the cone seeds of these alders.

Siskins are quite common in N. and C. Europe and they tend to move south during the winter. Some of these flocks would spend the winter in Sweden.

Most were quite high up in the trees but this female came to a lower branch and I took some shots at a distance off about 4 meters.

She wouldn't keep still: she kept twisting her head and body to get at the seeds in the cone, but on this occasion she was mostly upside down.

Alders are the only broadleaved trees that bear cones that provide an important part of the staple diet for Siskins and Redpolls.

This image was cropped by about 60%, reduced in size and sharpened and treated for noise. ISO 400 was used.

Ahh.. this is a beautiful photo! I like the lighting that makes the bird almost glow in the sunshine. Fantastic! I also like the fading background colours and the unusual crop.

I know the like this tree (al) and I will go on a walk right now trying to catch them myself.....

Hola Ivan:
Es un adorable cuadro! Me gusta la pose de esta pequeña avecilla para comer. Muy bien capturada por tu lente con buenos delalles y suaves colores que se destacan sobre el cielo azul.
Congratulaciones, y gracias por compartir.

This little energetic thing could be captured well at speed 1/1600 only, I can see, Ivan.
Wonderful image, and if you hadn't pointed out that it was hanging upside-down on the branch, I would have thought you had rotated the image for some reason and had then forgotten to set it right again :-)!
Very sharp, clear and colourful image with grand DOF. The light falling on the bird's face from above is very effective.

Hi Ivan

What a great and rather unique post!
I really like the pose of the little bird here...very interesting and funny :)
The details are very clear and sharp, the colors are brilliant (both on the bird and the BG, too) and the exposure is spot-on.
I also like the composition, although i have to admit i thought about turning the picture, but after imagining the result and where the light would come from...i think it great just the way it is :)

Cheers and TFS

A superb capture fine detail amazing background bokeh, sharp focus and detail very well done A beautifull shot tfs rgds Necip.

Hi Ivan,

Seven below! I freeze in Arizona when it goes below 70!

Lovely shot of the Siskin. I always enjoy watching the birds in strange positions.

Hi Ivan.
My congratulations on this amazing picture. Really great work. BRAVO.
Very original composition and pictured scene. Staggering lighting< sharpness and details of the bird and twigs. Beauty of the BG is tremendous too. Colour passages are superb. Once more BRAVO.

Hello Ivan,
What a beauty! It looks like our American Goldfich :) I love its pose, this is so beautiful! You had very nice lightning for this one and details are superb! This is very well done and I like this great BG. Thanks,

Hello Ivan,
very nice, lively capture of this funny head under pose. Remarkably good quality considering the cropping and ASA settings.
Very fine details on the bird's fluffy feathers, well fitting background, pleasant composition.
So winter finally has arrived to Sweden, too!

Hi Ivan,
I know they are terrible mobile birds. You did a great job to get this siskin framed. I saw very little of them so far. Are there more than other years in Sweden (due to high temperatures maybe)?
REgards, JAcob

Hello Ivan,
It´s marvelous your photo, the bird was making some acrobacies to get its food.
The sharpness and details are excellent, the same thing with the light.
