Well I got up early today and decided to go out and practice shooting in crappy weather. No sun, gray skies, and a light ice shower, basically just nasty all around! So grab a thermos full of coffee and went inside the hide. Let me tell you it was really cold and did not believe I would last long. I did tough it out for about 3 hours, by that time the coffee was gone and my toes were numb so back in the house I went, but not before I got some pretty good shots.

Here is one of the Red Bellied Woodpecker. I used my Sigma 120-300 and put on the 1.4X TC in order to get a really close up shot. I was quite pleased with the results considering the weather was not helping.

Greg

My setup when shooting:

1. Setup a fallen log using a tree stand to hold it upright, placed peanut butter in the naturally formed crevices.
2. The branch standing upright looked just like one of the dead trees the woodpeckers love to beat on.
3. Setup the two man hide/blind about 15 feet away from the branch.
4. Set the camera to manual mode.
5. Fired off several shots each time, checked the results and then fire off some more.
6. I constantly checked the level meter in the camera for changes in the light strength.

Camera Settings:

Location: Middletown, Delaware (Backyard)
Special Equipment: none
Processing: Saturation, contrast and levels.
Weather: Afternoon (11:48 AM)

Hi Gregory,

Don't know what happened to what I just wrote. This was worth the 3 hours in the cold. Just beautiful. I love the red eye and sparkling eye.

Hi Greg, really nice to read about how you got this photo. All that hard work paid off!
Love the detail, BG is perfect, and great composition.
Very well done.
Simon

A really nice filled image of this woodpecker I like the composition in this one a lot. Again sharp details and great color. :)

Nicely done Greg! Very sharp anf nicely composed image.
Looks to me like it was worth the effort.

I really enjoy reading about your technique. I certainly admire your perseverance. Numb toes finish me in a hurry. So, guess what I got.... Battery heated socks... can you imagine?! They are super. A size "D" battery keeps toes toasty for 7-8 hours. Yo managed great sharpness on the whole bird with that very shallow depth of field. Nice work.

Hi Greg

Another splendid shot from you and a very beautiful bird you present us here today!
It seems your efforts were worth it and the result is a wonderful one!
The 1.4x teleconverter sure aided you to capture such a charming portrait and gave you that extra "mile" so that the head details would really be impeccably sharp.
The colors are indeed brilliant but still keep a very natural look, the DOF is excellent and the vertical composition great!
Bravo, my friend for another top notch picture, and TFS
Horia

PS: Do you by any chance have a picture of your hide? I'd be very curious of how it looks like and what magic powers it has that help you take such close shots.

Hi Georgy,
Very nice details & exposure only wished you had moved a little to the right so there'd be less of the OOF trunk.
Nevertheless very good.

Gregory, maybe I'd try to add a little bit more of lighting, but it's just an opinion.

Apart from that, excellent colors, sharpness, pov and composition.

Lovely catchlight.

Hi Gregory,
Beautiful close up of this woodpecker!
I like so much the crop and details shown in this picture.
A very good POV to catch the pose of the bird and all the clear and sharp details seen, as always.
You managed so well the DOF to use the overcast sky and turn it into a background that works pretty well in the photo.
Very good the composition.
Congratulations, thanks for share and my best regards,
JM
