[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today I would like to start a small series of dedications to some friends and colleagues from TN who were so kind and decided to send their great insect pictures to the gallery of the Polish Entomological Society, Regional Section in Lodz, where these photos can be watched by students and professional entomologists.

Thank you very much for your help in popularization of ENTOMOLOGY! :>

The fist dedication is for Horia who was the first person sending his pictures of dragon and damselflies to me.

And for you dear Horia - this endangered dragonfly species in Poland - Cordulegaster boltonii (Donovan, 1807) - Common Goldenring (Anisoptera: Cordulegastridae).

This specimen was photographed in Zaborski Landscape Park (Bory Tucholskie) where the small population of this species occurs in some small rivers like Zbrzyca River.

Really I wrote some words about this species where I presented its larva (please see here), so there is no sense to repeat this information here :)

On the other hand I hope that some words about threatened Odonata species in Poland can be interesting for some of you :)

15 species are protected in Poland: Gomphus flavipes, Ophiogomphus cecilia (Gomphidae), Nehalennia speciosa, Coenagrion ornatum, C. armatum (Coenagrionidae), Sympecma paedisca (Lestidae), Somatochlora alpertris, S.arctica (Corduliidae), Cordulegaster botlonii (Cordulegastridae), Leucorhinia caudalis, L. albifrons, L. pectoralis (Libellulidae), Aeshna viridis, A. subarctca, and A. caerulea (Aeshnidae).

Moreover, 5 species is included in the Polish Red Data Book: 1 in CR category - Coenagrion armatum, in in EN category - Nahalennia speciosa and Somatochlora alpestris, and 2 in VU category - Cordulegaster boltonii and Somatochlora arctica.

According to the Polish Red Data List I have to say that 16 species of Odonata are included. All from Red Book (the some status in Red List), and also: in CR - Coenagrion ornatum, in EN - Aeshna caerulea, in NT - Aeshna subarctica elisabethae and Leucorhinia caudalis, in LC - Cercion lindenii, Aeshna affinis, A. viridis, Orthetrum brunneum, and Leucorhinia caudalis, and in DD category - Aeshna juncea and Orthetrum coerulescens.

I almost forgot to note that from Poland 72 species of Odonata are known :)

Hi Radomir

This is a very beautiful and flattering post. I am again honored by the dedication and i must say again that i'm very happy that our collaboration is going so well.
This is a splendid dragonfly and i sure would love to see it live once...who knows, mabe one day i'll take a trip to Poland :)
The colors and strong contrast between the yellow and black are simply superb and sure attract a lot of attention! ;)
The details - especially on the head, thorax and legs are outstanding and the vertical composition work terrific!
I'm sorry to hear that so many species od Odonata are on the redlist...but i hope they get enough protection so their population can increase.
BTW...i don't know how many we have, but 72 sounds very well :))

Cheers, my friend and TFS
Horia

Hello Radomir,
I have not yet seen this dragonfly even though it is present in many parts of Sweden as well as here in Scania. It is called "King dragonfly" in Sweden as I believe it has the longest body of all species in Europe.
Excellent capture showing us great details and the lovely colours. Good composition.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hello Radomir,
Your capture of C. boltoni is of high quality, the flash helping you to illuminte this just right , allowing good sharpness and DOF.
Your note is most interesting and makes me admit with some regret that we do not have any protected species of Dragonfly in Sweden! In fact the total numbers of Protected insect species can be counted on both hands!
This is probably due to the fact that Swedish entomologists believe more in protection of the habitat rather than prohibiting the collection of rare insects. This in itself is fine, but
they argue that if one prohibits collection then one smothers an interest in insects. Of course, I definitely do not agree with this, but that's how it is in Sweden.
Nice that you dedicate this shot to Horia: he is a very valuable member of TN.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Gracias y saludos... Ricardo

Very good details, excellent colors and perfect focus Radomir to show this beautiful specimen with aesthetic point of view in conjunction with the elect vertical framing.
In spite of the profuse of the bottom, the achieved diffusion allows that the silhouette of the animal takes off the background.
Correct assistance of the flash without producing undesirable reflections.
Thank you and greetings... Ricardo

Hi Radomir,
such a fine capture of this "Cordelugaster". Extremely rare in the Netherlands, but in the southeastern part where I live are still some populations left. I hoped to 'shoot' one this summer, but having seen your picture, there's no need anymore...:-) Perfect picture!
Regards, Jacob

Nice shot Radomir, I like the POV.
Good sharpness and DOF.
I like the yellow and black racing stripes too.
Well done
Chris
