A very nice close-up work and very useful note. I see that I've similar equipment too (Without ring filash). You managed a very nice job. BRAVO!
This shot of a Ladybird is a fine demonstration in the use of very small aperture coupled with flash. You have excellent DOF and very good sharpness in this close macro. The POV and composition are also very good. The teleconverter has worked very well. How far away from the objective was the ladybird - about 10cm?
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

a super macro of ultimate perfection - what a unique depth of field that is covering the whole bulky beetle! A perfect slightly frontal side approach brings us on eye level with the beetle and allows us to enter its microcosm incredibly closely. I love to see the fine hairs on the leaf's edge. You have placed focus with great skill and consideration to allow the gentle falloff in sharpness on the leaf that adds to a great depth within actually very short distances. Excellent equipment in the hands of a master of fine art photography. Congratulations!
With thanks, and my best regards,

An excellent macro. Very sharp detail in this frame filling shot of the ladybird. Your fill flash exposure was great. Beautiful colors! I really like the intricate detail that shows here.
well captured macro with great colors and sharpness, well use of fillflash,I am searching for a ring flash or twin flash for use on my 200mm macrolens, however still not managed to find an adress where I can find the 72mm adapter ring needed,

Dramatic closeup of this very small subject Alexei. Your flash has filled well with excellent color and detail. Great POV & comp.
As you say and I agree, the pros far outweigh the cons when it comes to teleconverter use. For the very small subject, there is no substitute :)
The only times I've employed the use of ext ring is in combination with the TC, for very small static subjects. It does require longer exposure times, TRIPOD, mirror lock, and wired remote to achieve the desired DOF of course. Your MFD is much closer than I experience. 15 CM is not much wiggle room..
Well done mf.

Great POV and flash use to get this close approach!
I like so much all the clear and sharp details got.
The DOF used works pretty well to vanish the foreground and the texture of the leaf behind.
I think this is a very good presentation.
Congratulations and thanks for share it with us.
My best regards,

Grandiose macro my friend with a heap of details of this type of insects always difficult to capture.
The use of the wide field depth collaborates with the integral focus of the ladybird, but also allowing the diffusion of the background.
In spite of use of the flash it is scarce the reflection effect in this case.
My best regards and thank you to continue the analysis of pro and contras that you offer us.

Great note and great amount of work to teach us more about macros. Good photo of common beetle, nice POV and colours. Maybe slightly unsharp in some areas. What are these strange red beings on ladybug body? They look like some kind of mites.
Back to your note - I recommend Raynox 250 for every compact cam owner. Now I can't imagine macro work without this fantastic lens, it makes HUGE difference.

I have a weakness for ladybirds and to see one like this is great. I have not seen them with red mites on them before. Your info is a fascinating insight into macro photography... something I need to look at in the future, but for the tim ebeing at least, I have my mountains....

Great macro, Alexei.
What sharp details and colours you have managed through your expertise in the field of optics!
I have always been curious about teleconverters and your workshop note gives a lot of answers to questions I have been wanting to ask.

Whow, a super macro shot, the colours are great, I think that I see on the back of this little one another little insect. The whole image is so crisp and clear and wonderfull sharp.

I like pictures which are perfect and additionally tell us something about nature - like your picture. The high magnification clearly shows the parasites on the ladybird. Focus, depth of field and sharpness are pretty good.
Best wishes, Peter

An excellet macro of this ladybug and its passengers :-)
Nice vivid colours and excellent detail.
A great note with lots of useful info.
cant comment too much on your notes but they seem comprehensive
what i do like is this little fellow going about his business...
have you ever employed slave lighting for this type of shot..its a bit of extra gear but you can fire the main lamp via your low powered on camera flash and keep it far enough away to employ some diffusion..
good in studio work but should work on macro..just watch for shadows.

At first I have to say, that to take a good picture of small object is not easy. At secodn to take a good photo of a beetle is not easy :) And finally it is not easy to photograph a shiny small beetle - like this ladybird :)
Very good macro with nice details and interesting POV. I really would like to do such photo by myself :)
PS. Are there some Acari on the beetle?

Another great photography lesson. The note is superb, as the wonderful and well focused macro. Details seen are incredible; the insect is very tiny!
Congratulations and thanks
This is one of your famous macros and macro lessons, I like it and I don't understand how I can have missed it. Maybe it is not going too fast here on TN :) I love the brilliance on the insect, those great colors and details, composition and low POV. I had a quick look at your notes but I'll be honest with you, someday, I'll read them all again and make sure that I understand every single point that you mentioned :) This day, I might be able to post great macro shots :-) Thanks for those useful tips,
