Arnica montana.

Whenever you are looking for butterflies on mountain meadows in summer you always come to see a lot of beautiful plants. So even if you happen to miss your apollo, you will always be well awarded up there.

Interrupting my recent show of dark Erebia butterflies, I would like to invite you to enjoy a short break on one of those mountain meadows to see some of the flowers.

Arnica montana (Linnaeaus, 1753)
Mountain Arnica, Wolf’s Bane
Arnika, Bergwohlverleih
l'Arnique des montagnes

Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Magnoliopsida
Order: Asterales
Genus: Arnica

A. montana is endemic to Europe, from southern Iberia to southern Scandinavia and the Carpathians. It is absent from the British Isles and the Italian and Balkan Peninsulas. A. montana grows in nutrient-poor silcaceous meadows up to nearly 3000 m. It is rare overall, but may be locally abundant. In more upland regions, it may also be found on nutrient-poor moors and heaths.

A. montana has tall stems (20–60 cm), supporting usually a single flower head. The flower heads are yellow, approximately 5 cm in diameter, and appear from May to August.

This plant is often used as remedy in herbal medicine. When the plant is in flower, the entire plant is used. An infusion of the leaves, used externally, is used as a treatment for bruising and sprains, but should not be used on broken skin, as it may lead to irritation. A cream or diluted tincture may be applied to treat alopecia. (For that I didn't try yet).

The location:

Nisslalm, an alpine meadow on the northern slopes of Gamskogel above the remote village of Gries im Sulztal, Oetztal, Tyrol, at an elevation of 2050m. Arnica can be found there in abundance, this one growing in the rare shade of Pinus cembra.

Photoshop Elements. Slightly cropped at the bottom, downsized to web.

Thank you for looking.
Have a very good day.

Hi Peter,
yellow flower and a blue sky, great colours for a Swede. ;-)
Nice colours, good details and well exposed.
I like the POV too.
Well done, my friend.

Great pov, which is what makes this photo work so well. Colors and background are excellent. Well done.

What a beautiful flower study, Peter!
I just love it.
People have been talking of tridents on TN lately.
This is the best trident of them all because it has flowers on each of its three points.
A trident of peace and joy.
Best regards.

Dein Oki

Hello Peter,
Amazing close up of this flower with oustanding color and superb details. Thanks for sharing Peter.

One flower < on the diagonal > splitting two buds, all of it offset beautifully against the black and blue b/g... Great compo Peter. But look at that detail of the one tiny blossom that fell in the petal gap! Outstanding in several ways!

Btw. I have seen these arnica in BC on my trips to Kelowna.

Tfs, J.

Hi Peter,
Wonderful 3D view from an excellent pov. Dof is perfect to see background in this luminous day. Great composition, colours and sharpness.
It seems another remedy for alopecia:-)
Best regards, José M.

Bonjour Peter,

Hello Peter,

excllent colors bg POV DOF perfect detail svery crisp nicly composed and captured photo excllent work

Hallo Peter,
Welch leuchtender Anblick.

Hi Peter.
You have shared picture of my favorite scenery: flowers (or butterfly) on rich BG. Such combinations are very pleasant for me. Amazing POV and DOF. Yellow colours are simply wonderful. It is really fire of life. Details and sharpness of the plant is great too as well as the beautiful and very impressive BG including branches on top right corner of the shot. May by cropping above the flower is slightly excessive. May be not. But I have got a great pleasure seeing this pictures. Thank you, dear Peter. I am also glad to see more your picture last time. My best wishes and TFS.

bonjour peter

Msi mejores saludos... Ricardo

I read the Ram's comment about the trident and I find this very appropriate dear friend.
Perhaps be not a spectacular capture, but I like... for the point of view, for the beautiful details of the main flower, for the brightness of the scene, although the yellow of the petals perhaps is perceived lightly saturated.
Anyway it is an aesthetic presentation like to be included in your portfolio.
Best regards... Ricardo
