Colaptes campestris

In Portuguese, pica-pau-do-campo; in English, campo flicker.

The Woodpeckers are a large family of similarly designed birds found in forested areas around the globe. The have specially evolved to deal with chiseling wood, including "shock-absorber" head musculature, extremely long tongues, and stiff tail feathers helping them perch upright on trees. Woodpeckers are often a "core species" of the woodland avifauna [except in two major areas that don't have any woodpeckers: Australasia and Madagascar].

Woodpeckers come in a great variety of shapes and colors. One group are the flickers which specialize in feeding on the ground, often focussing on ants. The Campo Flicker (above) of southern South America is such a species and a very striking bird to boot. Yet even it has the stiffly pointed specialized tail feathers that held woodpeckers perch vertically on tree trunks.

Hi Livio
These little Woodpeckers look wonderful against the blue sky. They have a very interesting colour pattern and a beak that means business. We have a woodpecker here called the Northern Flicker and is mainly brown. Nicely done with good notes.

Hello Livio,
Lovely scene depicting three Campo Flickers.
This is well composed against a clear blue sky and though two of the birds are a little OOF, their different poses give us some idea of what these birds look like.
TFS and best wishes,
Ivan

I love woodpeckers and you show three of them together, Livio.
What a rich feast for the eyes :-)!
A beautiful capture of these yellow faced birds against the sky.
Thanks for sharing it and bye.

Hi Livio,
great picture, with superb colors. The contrast between blue sky, other birds in the background and the tree is magnificant! Also the shadow of the tail is a nice detail.

Interesting colors in this specie of woodpecker Livio. I like the yellow wing edge and head feathers..The subject pecker has good detail, DOF, and exposure, and the blue sky color is great.
Perhaps a tele would help real it in better?
Especially high up in the tree-tops :)
Well done mf.

Bonjour Livio

Hello again,
Nice colors despite the harsh light. I like the unusual composition. Could use a little more depth of field it seems. Very fine capture all in all.
Best wishes,
Hakan

Oi Livio!
Dias atrás capturei dois desses, mas nem de longe a foto chega aos pés da sua. A iluminação está ótima e as cores, consequentemente, são fantásticas!
Abraço,
Zeca

Fiz um pequeno worshop. Espero que goste.
