Evening Grosbeak

Conservation status

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Aves

Order: Passeriformes

Family: Fringillidae

Genus: Coccothraustes

Species: C. vespertinus

Summer and all-year range
Hesperiphona vespertina

The Evening Grosbeak, Coccothraustes vespertinus, is a large finch. In the past, it was treated in a genus of its own as Hesperiphona vespertina, but is now usually placed in the same genus as the Hawfinch of Eurasia.

The breeding habitat is coniferous and mixed forest across Canada and the western mountainous areas of the United States and Mexico. The nest is built on a horizontal branch or in a fork of a tree.

The migration of this bird is variable; in some winters, it may wander as far south as the southern U.S.

The Evening Grosbeak is 18.5 cm long. The adult has a short black tail, black wings and a large pale bill. The adult male has a bright yellow forehead and body; its head is brown and there is a large white patch in the wing. The adult female is mainly olive-brown, greyer on the underparts and with white patches in the wings.

These birds forage in trees and bushes, sometimes on the ground. They mainly eat seeds, berries and insects. Outside of the nesting season, they often feed in flocks. Sometimes, they will swallow fine gravel for the salts.

The range of this bird has expanded far to the east in historical times, possibly due to plantings of Manitoba maples and other maples and shrubs around farms and the availability of bird feeders in winter.

Lovely colours and what a striking pose by the little guy,
is that snow?
Great Capture,
Cheers :D

Oooh... a pretty yellow one today. It must be cheerful to see one of these in mid winter. The head and beak look just a tad soft but I do like the way he is looking at you out of the corner of his eye.

Evelynn : )

salut Jean Paul,
mais ou est donc passé le geai bleu ? :)
l'image vaut le détour, ce gros bec à un sacré beau plumage. La compositon est bonne, mais cette la netteté est perfectible. Bon y'a plus qu'a ressortir pour un autre essai.

Salut Jean-Paul,
J'aime bien l'expression capturé ici. Merci,

Hi JeanPaul

This is a lovely colourful rear view of the beautiful grosbeak male giving you the "over-the-shoulder" look. I like the composition with the branch running across the frame, the bit of snow to show the weather condition and time of year, and the ample space you left for the bird to gaze into. The details are good, the BG is well removed and OOF, and the exposure was spot-on.

Good work and TFS.

Such a nice pose this Grosbeak is giving you, he is keeping an eye on you too. Lovely soft rich colours here. Very nice detail, I can see that his beak means business and is used for some very heavy duty seed crunching.
Good notes to.
TFS Janice

bonjour JP

Saludos.
