This is a shot I took a Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is abot 15 miles Northeast of Naples Florida, and is run by the National Audubon Society. A 2.25-mile raised boardwalk takes visitors through several distinct habitats found within the 11,000-acre Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, including the largest remaining virgin bald cypress forest in North America.

This is a young American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) The American alligator is the largest reptile in North America. The alligator can be distinguished from the American crocodile by its short, rounded snout and black color. This youngster was about 1 meter long, and probably slightly over 1 year old.

Adult alligators can reach up to 18 feet in length, although the average is 13 feet. An alligator's tail accounts for half of length. Male alligators, or bulls, are generally larger than females. On average, they weigh from 450 to 600 pounds.

Alligators can be found in rivers, swamps, bogs, lakes, ponds, creeks, canals, and bayous. Alligators can tolerate some salt water and have been spotted in marshes as well.

Widespread in Florida, alligators also live in Southern Texas,Louisiana, and parts of North and South Carolina, Georgia, and

Hello Scott,
Great portrait of this youngster. I have quite a few alligator photo back from my days in Louisiana. But none are nearly as good as yours. Incredible sharpness, color and contrast here. Very well done.

O yeah!
I know these little fellows very good :-) They are nicely coloured when young, always nice to observe if you watch out for the big mother that's watching you in such case :-)
Nice composition and good details!
Best greetings and TFS!

At first I'd say the quality of light here is great. Then, I'd say the composition with the gator coming in the frame from the right is refreshing. So many time we try to get the eye contact from the front but it get's too common and in this shot if you did that you might have gotten a finger bit off!
I like the detail here too, it's sharp and really shows us the scales.
Great work,

Hello Scott
What a cute alligator! He seems to be smiling, placidly basking in the sun.
The shot is excellent with a great sharpness and wonderful details and composition.
Very good job.
Best wishes

Hi Scott

Not the sort of baby you would want to pick up and cuddle.... well, I wouldn't anyway! Nice clear sharp details. I hope we don't see his skin on a pair of shoes or hand bag.... that would be tragic!

Hi Scott

This is truely an amazing alligator portrait!
I have so much respect and admiration towards these beautiful animals and a picture of them here on TN makes me just have a big smile on my face. Add to that that it's taken in a natural and pretected habitat and you make me a happy man :)

The photo itself is wonderful and the details and textures this "little" baby is presented with are terrific.
I raelly love all those scales and also that beautiful eye - with the very well visible vertical pupile.
The DOF is also great - isolating your subject from the BG and the POV is excellent.
Lovely colors, light and composition, as well.

I'm walking on very thin ice here, but i think that the strong sunlight produced a bit of extra hue here, making the alligator a bit blue-ish instead of black (i know it shouldn't be a mate black, but still)...so i tried a version in a WS...hope you don't mind.
I might have gone a little too far with it, so please tell me your honest opinion.

Anyway, Bravo for this wonderful picture and TFS

Hi Scott

What? A smiling alligator(!) and an absolutely sheepish grin to add to that. I think I've now seen everything. Maybe it had a good look at your steaks and gave you this comforting smile, in the same manner that the wolf must have smiled at "little Red Riding Hood" (not that you could be classed as little though).

It is an excellent capture and I just love the composition and POV. The details are very sharp and well defined. The colours are great, but I think Horia's workshop did justice to your photo with the spiked up tones. The exposure was well done with good lighting on the subject.

Good work and TFS.

Hi Scott,
baskin in the sun, but ready to jump. Very nice shot of this Alligator. From this POV it looks very timid. POV, details and sharpness are great.

Lovely animal, colors composition and POV.
Above all, lovely pose. It seems he is smiling.

In your note you compare the alligator with the american crocodile. Did you mean "african crocodile". I thought there is no crocodile in US.

wow, what a handsome dude!!!
