Panthera tigris

Tigers are the largest and heaviest cats found in the wild. Although different subspecies of tiger have different characteristics, in general male tigers weigh between 200 and 320 kg (440 lb and 700 lb) and females between 120 and 181 kg (265 lb and 400 lb). At an average, males are between 2.6 and 3.3 metres (8 feet 6 inches to 10 feet 8 inch) in length, and females are between 2.3 and 2.75 metres (7 ft 6 in and 9 ft) in length.

Most tigers have orange coats, a fair (whitish) medial and ventral area and stripes that vary from brown or hay to pure black. The form and density of stripes differs between subspecies, but most tigers have in excess of 100 stripes. The now-extinct Javan tiger may have had far more than this. The pattern of stripes is unique to each animal, and thus could potentially be used to identify individuals, much in the same way as fingerprints are used to identify people. This is not, however, a preferred method of identification, due to the difficulty of recording the stripe pattern of a wild tiger. It seems likely that the function of stripes is camouflage, serving to hide these animals from their prey. The stripe pattern is found on a tiger's skin and if shaved, its distinctive camouflage pattern would be preserved.
Like most cats, tigers are believed to have some degree of colour vision.

The Bengal tiger lives in a wide range of habitats, including the high-altitude, cold, coniferous Himalayan forests, the steaming mangroves of the Sunderbans, the swampy reedlands, the scorched hills of the Indian peninsula, the lush wet forests of Northern India, and the arid forests of Rajasthan. Save The Tiger Fund has identified several key landscapes that are home to significant groups of Bengal tiger populations that have been identified in the recent Tiger Conservation Landscapes document. They are 1) Terai Arc Landscape at the foothills of the Himalayas in India and Nepal, 2) the Eastern Himalayan forests and tall-grasslands anchored by Bhutan, 3) Myanmar’s Hukuwang Valley, 4) the Sundarbans mangrove forest in India and Bangladesh, 4) the Tropical dry and moist forests in the Central Indian Highlands, and 5) the Western Ghats of India.

Hi Jose.
What a sweet portrait of tiger you have created. The pose of the animal and expression of its face are really amazing and full of feelings. Quality of reproduction of the hair, colours, sharpness are perfect too. I lie your POV and cropping so much. I repeat my words: superb portrait work. Bravo and best wishes.
Alexei.

Hi José
Very good compo and a beautiful animal portrayal but the DOF is a bit shallow, I think.
A bit puzzled about background too.
Overall well done
TFS
Annick

Lovely portrait of a calm and relaxed tiger, Jose.
The majesty and dignity of this proud cat are well captured in this brilliant close-up shot.

As your note states, India has been home to Bengal Tiger, as the name suggests. However, it is a saddening and alarming fact that the species is almost on the verge of extinction in its own homeland. Poor up-keep, poaching and depletion of habitat are some of the factors that have contributed to this sorry state of affairs.
Thanks for sharing this great picture.

eye catching portrait of great insensity.
perfect framing concentrating on the face. Showing it emerging diagonally out of the dark adds to the impression of capture in motion, and it provides a well supporting neutral background. An excellent composition obviously obtained by closely cropping a much larger image, the rather poor resolution due to close cropping not much of an issue here as liveliness and intensity have been achieved in a perfect way.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Hi Jose,
Superb portrait shot with very impressive details and colours. I like the innocent expression on its face and the black BG which lets the tiger stand out perfectly. Great lighting and exposure. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.
