The cactus wren is about eight inches (21 cm) long. It has a white belly with brown spots, and speckled brown, black and white feathers on its back, wings and head. It has black feathers on its throat and a long stripe of white feathers that look like eyebrows. It has long legs and a long pointed bill.

The cactus wren lives in desert thickets and areas with large cactus like the cholla. It needs areas with cactus or thorny plants or bushes strong enough to hold its large nests. Cactus wrens build two nests, one for their young and one for roosting.

The cactus wren forages for food on the ground. It uses its long bill to turn over things on the ground. It eats ants, beetles, grasshoppers, wasps, fruits and seeds. Sometimes it will eat small frogs and lizards. It is adapted for life in the desert and gets most of the water it needs to survive from the food it eats.

Cool shot, Jane!
Hope this guy know that he is resting @ cactus :)
Nice details and pose.

Hi Jane,
Beautiful picture of this cactus wren!
I like so much the pose of it captured, it's really good, as well as your POV to present it to us.
You had very good light there, and took good advantaje of it.
Did it pretty well with the DOF to put away the background.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,

Hello Jane,
High quality shot of a Cactus Wren. This is sharp, well composed has fine OOF BG and with good lighting and the bird has a good pose on the cactus.
This bird is very attractive.
Well done and TFS!

Hi Jane,
Super shot,I like the composition and the bird pose.

Hi Jane!

Well done here with getting this bird looking so alert. The detail is good though being at the end of your zoom range has left some signs of pixellation notable in the background. That is only down to the equipment and not your technique or skill. The image is well composed and the background takes on a watercolour effect of mottled colours.

Nice job.

Very good shot Jane, a beautiful bird and a great picture. Well composed with a good technique, thanks,

Hi Jane, Lovely shot of this Wren. I see it is much larger than the Wrens here in the UK which vie with the Goldcrest for the title of our smallest bird.
Looks slightly to sharp and that is probably the reason for the faint white line round the outside of the bird. You caught it just right though and I am glad it is not me on that cactus.

Hello Jane,
Very sharp photo in a wonderful light. Great POV en pose against a beautiful soft BG.

Like Paul, I see a strong magenta and blue color cast here - but otherwise, a great shot of this wren - even the eye colors are clear.

Hi Jane,

I really like this image. You have captured the wren really well. The exposure was spot-on, really good. I like the pose and the composition. Well done.

Paul did a great workshop.

very interesting and pretty bird, great note and super post, well done

Hello Jane
Great Shot, perfect pose sharp and colourful, nice blurry BG,TFS

Another great bird of the Southwest. Isn't it interesting how so many of them have that same scaled pattern as a snake...the brown to beige to black. Of course, it's camo...but why doesn't anybody look like a cactus. ha ha ha

Your work is excellent!!
I've always loved Arizona and you share it's beauty with us all.

Hello Jane,

You didn't find a better perch for this cactus wren :-)

Excellent POV and good choice of aperture with f/4.0 letting us see the whole cactus in focus! Great position of the bird and natural colors (but better in the workshop on my screen)! The bg is blurred enought to not distact us from the bird!

Good job and TFS!

Wonderful bird.
Beautiful pov and nice colors.
Well done!

Beautiful sharp detailed Wren image Jane.
Fine color and sweet BG.
Well done !

Hi Jane,
Thanks for your support :-)
This pictire is really cristal clear sharp and very good detailed. Colours are natural. First time I see this kind of bird ! We don't have them here. It's probably too cold... and no cactus here :-O !
Thanks for sharing,

Hi Jane,
Nice sharply detailed photo of this cactus wren, soft background really brings out the bird's fine plummage. Simply superb!

I am VERY pleased this is your second most popular(by the numbers at least) picture at TrekNature.

Not only is the Cactus Wren the State bird of Arizona but it's mournful call heard in the quiet desert air is one of the most beautiful sounds you will ever hear.
