Australasian Gannet

With its 2-metre wingspan, golden head and dramatic plunging dives, the white Australasian gannet is an easily identified seabird. Adult gannets are about the size of a goose, with black-tipped wings, black central tail feathers and a strong, conical blue-grey beak. Juvenile birds look quite different. In their first year they have speckled brown feathers on their upper body, and white undersides. Each year more white feathers appear on their backs, and the birds acquire their adult appearance by five years of age.

New Zealand is one of the best places in the world to view Australasian gannets. There are three accessible mainland breeding colonies – at Cape Kidnappers, Muriwai and Farewell Spit.

There are also 21 offshore gannetries, and an expanding population. The largest breeding colonies are on the Three Kings Islands, Gannet Island, and White Island. The birds live all around New Zealand’s coastal waters, especially north of Cook Strait. They are also found around much of the Australian coast, including Lord Howe and Norfolk islands.

Hi Pam,

Wonderful bird this gannet. I've never seen this typical species before. I only know the gannet wit a white head and not the spotted one. Very sharp portrait and nice colors.

hello pam!
waht a fine bird with very
nice colours
not the perfect pov but
sharp and with good compo!
well done!

Hi Pam.
I really love this pic, great photo. very well done. tfs. Stev

Really crisp image, the details are fabulous. The exposure is spot on. I couldn't help but read some of the notes on this post. I dont understand why (DOBIS) thinks the shadow is bad when there is no shadow, and if he's talking about the light, I think its perfect it feels like a overcast day which makes for great photography. :)

Hi Pam

This lovely juvenile must be a young lassie judging by that extravagant blue eye shadow. You have captured brilliant details of this beautiful bird and the colours and contrasts are just great.

I like the full composition of this close-up portrait and I think you did a great job. Even Paul Kettel (pauljk) is licking his lips and he has some wonderful gannet shots. So, that sounds like a great compliment to me.

Well done and TFS.
