Indeed, Croatia is a Slavic country. It belonged to the ex-Yugoslavia before the civil war there. I don't know very much on its history either, but from what i've seen, it should definitely be vast since it's a gorgeous place, situated on the coast somewhere half way between Italy and Greece - two big empires in the past.
As for its relief, you are right again: it's all those factors that eroded the rocks and gave them their shape today. However, no picture does justice in this respect...you simply can't see the whole beauty of the place unless you are actually there :)
