I quoted from your notes 'little is known' - because this applies to many wild animals / bodily functions.
When we lived on a (small) farm near Hoedspruit (Limpopo, South Africa), we treated our animals not like farmers but more like pets. Ergo Vets were needed, and the treatment ALWAYS consisted of a drip - what ever animal, whatever problem - and if we had not spent a lot of time nursing the patient, it would have died. When it survived, we did not really know why nor did the vet!
When successful, vets and farmers from other areas contacted us to find about the treatment... :-)
