Indeed, this photo needed more PP work than normal for me.
In photoshop CS4:
First it was cropped to about 60% of the original.
Cut to 800 x 531.
Selected the bird and most prominent branches (see photo) and sharpened 200%.
Then turned the selection and blurred the background 4 pixels.
Improved all the edges of the bird and branches with the clone stamp. (a lot of work)
Get to shadows and highlights and improved both a few percent.
Removed a bit of blue out of the blacks in color balance.
A bit extra saturation.
Turned the photo horizontally.
And there is the result.
Not totally satisfied.
