Well the keepers used to be pretty low but are getting better now. I generally don't use flash...having said that I recently posted an image with flash. That was the exception though as the light was so low I would not have been able to achieve a decent image.
My equipment is a Nikon D200 with either a 300mm F4 prime or a 70-200mm F2.8 zoom. You really do need quite fast lenses i.e. in the F2.8 to F4 range. Generally I shoot wide open to get the fastest possible shutter speed while trying to keep the ISO down to 200 max if possible. The fast glass is expensive though. Having siad that Pam (Coasties) and Jason (Mazer) get good shots with medium speed zoom lenses i.e. the Canon 100-400mm, Jason has recently got rid of that lens though and uses the 300mm F4 IS lens.
Having siad that though I just blaze away trying to improve every time I'm out. No cost associated with film and processing so just go for it. My first postings here a year ago weren't too flash but I'm finally coming to grips with things. Still a long way to go and I still have complete disaster sessions :o). I think birds like the SIlver Eye have the potential to drive you nuts. I'm trying for a decent Fan Tail image...they just move too fast.
