Evidently they are not that rare. I just read that 12,000 are trapped every year for their fur in Louisiana. They are considered a non-endangered species with stable poulations but it is the first one that I have ever seen, I think. There are many Nutria at the pond and a first that's what I thought it was but I have never seen a Nutria raise it's head out of the water like that. About ten years ago a girl I knew from Michigan said she saw a River Otter there and I told here she was crazy, that it was just a Nutria. She said she had seen many at home and she was not mistaken. I never gave it a second thought. United States
