I've been reading your "off centre" statement. IMO opinion cropping and composition matters -even if you are trained in it- are often more or less a trial and error process and quite time consuming. Moreover it is so that 'good' pictures often qualify for different interpretations concerning the former.
In this specific photo I tried to apply the rule of thirds i.e. I took the eye and measured one third from above and one third from the left edge.
I think, however you didn't mentioned it though, your argument could be the direction in which the bird is looking...
I think your right, in portraiture there should be space in 'that' direction as a rule of thumb. However sometimes the image can get stronger compositionwise through playing with that rule; being a bit provocative...
