DOF at F/4 - a compact camera's much increased DOF in the macro range definitely comes as a benefit, at least as long as the equipment was made with good enough precision, enabling us to use natural light and short shutter speeds at close distances. Working with a significantly smaller chip size, the actual focal length is just about 17% of a full size dSLR, in consequence significantly increasing the DOF just like using a super wideangle. On the other hand, the creative use of short DOF to isolate an object from its BG or foregrund has been much limited with such an equipment.
