I am sorry to hear about your problem. The 20D with Canon's 500mm prime does not do this. And I believe the sigma one shouldn't either.
My diagnosis is the same as yours... It could be the body, the lens or the combination. Try another body, then a lens.
But speak to the people you bought it from.
