This is a sign of how bad my eyes are getting - I didn't notice it until you mentioned it! It is a desert melon. They are very common as they have very very hard skins and take a lot of breaking into. They are very light, but can protect the seeds for many years until the next heavy rains. In places I have seen the vines cover the ground for many meters.
