Hi Peter
Ethiopia is amazing, but ... things are changing. I have been last year to the north (Lake Tana, Lalibela and Menz Guassa with wolves), people are extremely nice and landscapes breathtaking! Agriculture as practised 100 hundred years ago in Europe is present everywhere and RAPTORS! Everywhere too and not shy , a paradise.
This year we went to southern Omo valley and obviously the situation is quite different. Tribes are more and more used to tourists and some scenes were not nice (mainly sedentary people drinking all day long) whereas other villages were friendly and obviously not (yet) spoiled. The ones that became sedentary were not so due to tourism but obviously big changes are underway: Gibe dam 2 and 3, large cotton fields or sugar cane production with huge industries in the middle of nowhere made possible by chinese highways and foreign investments, people driven away from their grounds, alcool and arms everywhere. We also went to Omo NP on the west bank of Omo valley close to the Kenya border. No tourists, infrastructure non existant (quite a few large mammals), long, long way to get out and back to Adis and than in the middle of the national park hundreds of trucks and Caterpillar cutting the plains of the NP in two to create a channel to get water to the southern part where cotton fields and sugar cane plantations are planned.
Next year we want to go back with main target Bale mountains. I guess mountains will be safe for many more decades but every flat land around Adis nowadays is intensive agriculture (mainly flowers and tomatos for the World), let's hope the best for this wonderfull country and its people but things are a changing
