I had returned to San Angelo State Park to look for wildlife photo opportunities. This is the same day as the Bison shot I posted earlier. I went to the birding area and sat for a while in the hide. After about ten minutes several different species of bird suddenly came out of nowhere to visit the water hole. This Golden Fronted Woodpecker was the liveliest of the bunch and is my favorite of the bird photos. While in the park I also saw a couple Javelina but I was driving and they were gone before I could get stopped to get a decent shot off. I will put the not so good Javelina photo in the WS.

About Golden Fronted Woodpeckers

A stripe-backed woodpecker of Mexico and Central America, the Golden-fronted Woodpecker reaches the United States only in the brushlands and open woodlands of Texas and Oklahoma.
Cool Facts

* The Golden-fronted Woodpecker is composed of four subspecies that differ in size, amount of barring on the tail, and the color of the nape, nasal tufts, and belly. Whereas the nape of the form found in Texas and most of Mexico is yellow to orange, it is red on the Yucatan Peninsula and orange farther south. The four forms were formerly considered different species.

* The Golden-fronted Woodpecker consumes about as much fruit and nuts as it does insects. In summer in Texas, the faces of some woodpeckers become stained purple from eating fruit of the prickly pear cactus.

They even have sounds of their call you can listen too. Great site.

Hello Billy,
This is so brilliant. Beautiful perch on that tree in vertical position so that the back is fully exposed. All the details and clarity are very well managed in superb clarity and contrast. Very well done and have a wonderful weekend.
Regards from Malaysia,
Jusni

Only thing which like less is the frame, it takes to much attention from this beautiful bird imho.

Hi Billy, a great and stunning shot! We feel the forest just by looking at it. I love the pattern of the tree trunk with the one on the back of the bird. The blurred background adds to the beautiful composition with its colour and harmony. And, most of all, the frame you added is fantastic, it seems like it is made out of the picture... anyway, the whole altogether is really an harmonious and beautiful picture, an homage to this beautiful woodpecker. Thank you!

Hi Billy,

This is the first of your pictures I have seen and it's a stunner. I love the vertical composition, with the bird giving you a nice profile. The colours, light, dof and pov are all perfect. An amazing shot.
