MERHABA DOSTLARIM,
Please forgive my lateness in posting my notes, but I faced some difficulty in connecting to TN...
My present posting may look like a breaking ocean wave to you, or maybe the grimacing mouth of a Walt Disney character, in fact it is neither, but is the shell of Scaphander lignarius, popularly known as a Canoe Bubble Shell, which belong to carnivorous Scaphandridae family feeding on mainly scaphopods (tusk shells), and in the Mediterranean is frequently present in great depths with sandy-muddy bottoms, so it is not usual to find them among beach litter.
Like the other members of the superfamily Philinacea, the live gastropod is almost twice as big as its rather reduced shell, so it is unable to withdraw into its somewhat elongated, thin and fragile shell, which is partly covered by its mantle folds. It is also a typical member of the subclass Opistobranchia, which usually do not undergo torsion during development, or later become detorted, so their gills are situated behind their hearts. Aside from the internal posterior gill, they also sport a tentaculate process of the mantle cavity, the palliocaecum, but the function of this structure is yet unknown.
The mature gastropod may be up to 14 cm and its shell, which is typically rolled up like a scroll, up to 7 cm long (the one displayed here is 5 cms), the shell is yellowish orange with grayish white innards. The narrow aperture widens toward the anterior of the shell. The body whorl has spiral incised lines and fine growth lines. The shell of a live specimen sports a covering of fine, darker coloured periostracum, partly visible here.
This specimen was trawled from the 80 meters deep Gerence Bay, Karaburun, Izmir and photographed under slightly lateral available daylight with open-shade coditions, over a dark BG.

Hi Mehmet. I had not taken much notice of shells until you started posting them on TN, Now i see them as a thing of beauty. I like the warm colours of the outer shell and the white inside. Against the black bg it looks 3D , Well taken TFS.

Merhaba Mehmet Bey,

Merhaba Mehmet Bey,
A pretty well perfect capture of this fairly large Mediterranean gastropod, S. lignarius. Your excellent use of the ambient light and fine POV has given us a sharp and optimal view of its features against a fine black BG.
I imagine that the full size of this specimen must be 10 cm when the shell is occupied.
Thanks and have a good week MF,
Ivan

A fantastic capture of this beautiful shell showing the rounded form and colours so well!
I'd like to stretch out my finger and touch the smooth inside! An interesting note to go with this 'Canoe Buble Shell' too (what a lovely name!)

Merhaba Hocam,
Her zamanki gibi harika bir kare, elinize sağlık.
Saygılarımla

Very thoughtfully captured image of this lovely shell that looks so very different from other familiar shell shapes, Mehmet.
The golden brown outer side contrasts beautifully with the inner pearl grey smooth side, giving the shell a three dimensional appearance.
Your shell theme is an inexhaustible source of pleasure for all of us who chase bugs, birds and butterflies.
Regards,
Ram

Hallo Mehmet
Thanks for all your kind stops at my latest postings. Your valuable input is always appreciated.
Once again you spoil us with a lovely image and an important and educational note. Yes, this shell indeed looks like one of the waves in the ocean, the similarities is almost unreal. I very much like the thick lining on the upper side of this beautiful shell as well as the finer linings on the inside. The details of your subject is brought across beautifully. A neat image to look at, and appreciate. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hello Mehmet,
A very simple and elegant shape for this well photographed Canoe Bubble Shell. You have chosen a very interesting view of this shell, not the upper part, but the innerside and a suggestion of what is the color of the shell. Very professionally made shot.
Thanks also for your interesting note.
Have a nice weekend. Kind regards
Anne

Hi Mehmet,

I don't know how I missed this one especially since I always look for your shells. This is a beauty with wonderful colors and details. I love the shape and how beautiful it looks against the black background.

Jane

Your words over the years have been kind and a learning tool for me. Your style in imaging has set a standard...perhaps it was set decades ago, but for someone today to have the same qualities of excellence that you seem to have...and the very special ability to pass along what you know is much more than anyone would have thought. thanks so much...for everything...and have a very good New Year!
bob

Merhaba Mehmet bey,
Fantastic shell shot as always from You, beautiful colors, details, and sharpness in the focus area. Very interesting (also Your note) and at the same time pleasant to my eyes. Tfs and congrats.
At the same time I wish You & Your loved ones a very happy and productive new year. Best regards from Hungary, László

Hello Matatur.
Excellent framing exposing the inner details of smooth white.
The ouside has very nice coloration and captured well against the negative space.
Thanks and kind regards - Jusni
