The Indian or Common Myna / Mynah Bird

I saw many more Myna birds than any other birds when I was on Castaway Island, Fiji. They were always at the outdoor dining areas waiting for people to leave their tables so they could fly up and see what food they could grab.

The Myna bird is in the list of 100 of the world's worst alien invaders. It's called the 'Flying Rat', and has become more of a menace than the insects it was introduced to control.

It's the Indian mynah - an aggressive, noisy, cocky little bird that's taking over city backyards and parks, and here in Fiji it is very well established out on the islands too.

Around 150 yeas ago, the Indian or Common Myna (Mynah) was introduced into to South Africa and many islands in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans such as New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Brunei, Sumatra, Fiji, Hawaii, and Cook Islands in the 1860s.

They are well established in New Zealand and Fiji. These birds are a significant threat to native birds because they prey on their eggs and young and compete for food and nest hollows.

Hi Janice

I like that name: "Flying Rat". It's not only uncannily akin to the way these birds invades
through "hostile take over" the territories and space of naturally occurring species, but it
best describes its marauding behaviour and filthy habits as well. On the other hand, they
are not really ugly birds, by anybodies standards, and apparently they do become rather
good friends with people or make excellent pets in captivity, mimicking human speech to
a very high degree. Anyway, you did manage to captured this one with lovely sharp detail
and very natural colours. Maybe a slight bit of OE on the white plumage, but that is such
a small area that it does not really create any distraction.

To you, Dave, Allen, and Cameron, I wish a wonderful, healthy, and prosperous 2010.

Kia Ora MF and TFS.
Warm regards
Loot

Hi Janice,
Although this bird species is like pest, Your photo shows him / her very well, with good sharpness and nice colors. Using roofs as the background is a good idea - bg isn't busy yet quite unique, and makes the whole image a pleasant6 one to look at. Awesome color contrast. Great job Madame.
Tfs, best regards, László
