MERHABA DOSTLARIM!
First of all, I would like to wish a healthy and prosperous life for every one of the TN members and nature lovers in the coming New Year ! With this aim, I'd like to introduce you to a lovely bivalve known variously as Jewel Box Chama, Leafy Jewel Box or Spiny Jewel Box, a.k.a. Chama (=Echinochama) lazarus, a regular denizen of rocky seas from Philippines to Indonesia, of tropical to subtropical seas, also found in the Mediterranean - Aegean system from rocky-muddy shores to a depth of almost 150 meters.
The Jewel Box Clams (Family Chamidae) usually become attached to a hard substratum in an early stage of development. Because of this sessile mode of life, they resemble oysters. Chama is the sole surviving genus of a very prolific group of fossil oysters dating from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, from some 200 million years ago. In Chama lazarus the deeply conical left valve is cemented to some rocky or otherwise hard substrate while the somewhat flattened right valve forms a cover, just like those seen in the members of the family Spondylidae. Consistent with this immobility, the foot is greatly reduced. The upper valve is sculptured with numerous scale-like foliations. The roughly circular valves are so irregularly shaped that the animal has little resemblance to an ordinary bivalve. The slightly reduced hinge has two blunt main teeth but one of them is often partly or entirely degenerated. As with a spondylid, the springy ligament is inside the shell within the hinge, but strongly differing from that group of bivalves, each valve bears two almost equal deep muscle scars. The upper valve is whitish or creamy coloured, usually with a curious orange streak. The individual displayed here has a diameter of 7.5 cms, shown from the upper (right) valve side, but the left valve is partly seen at below left, the umboes of the two valves are also visible at left center.
The shell was illuminated from left side with directional available diffuse daylight with open shade conditions, a white cardboard passive reflector was also used at right to provide a weak fill-in light, over my usual black BG.

Enfes bir çekim, koyu fonda olağanüstü duruyor. Emeğinize ellerinize sağlık Mehmet bey. Neyin omurgası olduğunu merak ettim :)Jevel demişsiniz, ayrıca katogori seçiminde yumuşakça seçilmiş, ikisi farklı canlı yapıları değil midir?
Selamlarımla,
Bedri..

Hi Mehmet

Another beautiful "jewel" added to your already impressive shell portfolio. This Spiny
Jewel Box with its complex and elaborate details are absolutely stunning. As usually
your note is very informative. The composition is great and the exposure levels were
spot-on. The colour rendition is good showing the pearly white shell with its gorgeous
orange, red, and yellow markings.

Thanks for the kind New Years message and to you and your loved ones I also wish
a wonderful, healthy, and prosperous 2010.

Well done and TFS.
