MERHABA DOSTLARIM!
Again some time elapsed since my last posting, had to look after some unavoidable business as usual and won't be able to post new ones in the coming several months, will be in Ovacik, Cesme again during the summer months...
The topic of my present posting is the shell of one of the most beautiful marine gastropods, a Queen Conch or Pink Conch, a Strombus gigas known from the tropical waters of Florida and West Indies.
Members of the genus Strombus usually have a solid shell with an expanded body whorl, narrow aperture thickened outer lip and a short siphonal canal. A characteristic of these shells is the "stromboid notch", an indentation near the posterior part of the outer lip through which one of a pair of tentacles, each carrying a well developed eye protrudes. The narrow operculum is horny, the foot very muscular and can move them along remarkably quickly. They prefer shallow warm waters with sandy or sandy-muddy bottoms, and are vegetarians.
The moderately long spire (top left) of the Queen Conch has short, blunt and strong spines at the shoulders of the whorls. Coarse spiral ridges and cords, sometimes with coarse axial ribs and folds are present near the columella of the body whorl. Strongly flared lip (bottom right) of the longish aperture extends posteriorly to almost level with the apex of the shell (top-left). Over it finely etched axial growth lines can be discerned. The narrow, horny operculum of the live mollusk has a razor-sharp edge, if the animal is disturbed in its habitat close to the beach, it can beat about wildly, and inflict deep wounds into a wader. Narrow but deep stromboid notch is not visible in this view. Short siphonal canal is slightly recurved. Colour pinkish cream to white, aperture a rich shining rose pink with some yellow areas ( will demostrate these features in a future posting). The species is consumed in huge quantities as food, rarely produces a pink pearl within its mantle folds.
The 17 cm long shell was photographed under directional ambient daylight with open-shade conditions coming from top-left to demonstrate the surface sculpturings of the shell, a contra placed white cardboard passive reflector was used to provide some fill-in illumination. A black BG was chosen.

Hello Mehmet,
Wonderful shot of this conch shell with very impressive sharpness, colours and details. I like its shape and form and the soft colours on the inside. Superb use of flash lighting and the resultant black BG lets the subject stand out nicely.Best regards Siggi

nice giant, greetings Ori

Hi Mehmet,
not long ago I submitted an image of some fungi's placed on the white background and the editors of the website decided that it is a Studio shot! That image was removed from the site by them. I can not see why we can not learn from that images if they can provide some detail information about the species. Certainly in your case here the black background is giving us a great visual and contrasty isolation of the subject and the result is awesome, Mehmet! Great dept of field, powerful colors and tons of detail! Well done!
Regards,
George Veltchev

As you must have noticed, I'm happily relocated, Dr Mehmet.
It is a great pleasure to have enough time now to look at your work on TN.
This particular specimen of shells is very beautiful. Needless to say, you turn a shell into a thing of beauty through your photographic art.
Thanks for sharing it and best regards.

Hi Mehmet,
The details and colors are gorgeous. I like the black background as it is non-distracting and immediatly brings attention to your subject and nothing else. Well done. :)

Merhaba Mehmet dostum
A few days’ trip north to visit family has delayed my activity on TN!
This is a fine capture of Queen Conch taken from a nice POV with excellent sharpness, colours and lighting to make this a very good portrait of the shell of this species.
Thanks for sharing this one! I remember seeing these in Trinidad some years ago. Thanks for this fine reminder!
Best regards,
Ivan

A lovely shot showing us the details perfectly, complimented by the note perfectly.
Cheers!

Merhaba Mehmet,
a fantastic macro shot in perfect "still-life", superb sharpness and marvellous contrast of colours against a black BG, artistic composition

Best regards

I believe I had one for a bit. My parents bought it when I was young. That was at a shell shop in Florida.

Wonderful and very professionally done as per your usual. You make a good teacher..something America is short on.
Bob

Dear Mehmet,
a great pleasure to see your very thoughtful and skilful presentation of the Carribbean Conch. Finest shapes and an incredibly subtle range of pastel colours made visible by that very carefully controlled and reflected daylight, further enhanced by a radically black background. Another valuable contribution to that most attractive collection of scientific artworks from you. Looking forward to see the aperture in one of your next presentations. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter

Merhaba Mehmet bey,
Wonderful presentation. I like this kind of shell photos very much, even if they aren't made in the nature. Fantastic details, sharpness, colors, contrast - this black background you use for your photos is awesome. I'm just learning how to do something like this in the nature. Also thanx for sharing your always informative and in-depth notes. Superb post. Bravo.

Hallo Mehmet
This particular shell looks as if is a few star shaped figures stacked on top of each other, then filed to utter perfection, painted with caution, buffed and presented for the admiration of many to see. How beautiful it is and how beautifully you have presented it. A striking macro indeed. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
Anna

Hi Mehmet. Your picture is fantastic! I work for the BBC and am making a documentary about the Phonecians. They used to extract purple dye from the murex shells which is how they got their names - Phonecians comes from the Greek for people of royal purple dye. Your photo is a wonderful clear image! If you would allow us to use it, I'd be grateful if you could email me at [email protected] so I can send you a release form! Kind regards Jon

Hi Mehmet.
I have not opportunity to visit TN when I wish and I have missed many your amazing pictures. Your shell pictures are blameless and this one is too. Brilliant reproduction of shapes, colouration and all other details of the shell. You also managed to achieve an impressive 3D-look. Lights are great as well as the composition of the shot. Bravo.
Well done.

The macro point of view is showing the details and colors of the Queen Conch. It is well framed. The good luminosity is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.
