Diagnóstic Description : Measures 109 cm. and weighs 3 kg. It is unmistakable is the only common pelican on our shores.
Adults have a dark grayish-brown body. The feathers at the top have a silvery luster. The head and neck are white and the beak is brownish. The bag and the skin of the face and legs are grayish black.
During the breeding season is mainly his neck black. The nuchal crest is brown. Presents a yellow tinge on the head and the skin around the eye is red. The peak boasts a pinkish tinge. In immature specimens the head, neck and upper parts are brown and the abdomen is white. They reach adult plumage final after 3 years.
Hábitat : They live in coastal waters and is rarely away from them. They take refuge in rocks, trees and boats.
Territory: Individuals forage daily over a wide area of territory.
Food: They feed on fish caught by diving from heights of up to 10 m. Do not dive. Consume waste and scrap; go to the fishing boats.
Reproduction: The nest is a small circular platform made of sticks, perched on a bush or tree, and rarely on the ground, on islands off the coast. Put 2 to 3 white eggs that are stained brown quickly in the nest. The peak of egg laying season is from January to February, the majority of young people flying in May.
Seasonality: A resident species, although some individuals may be migratory Nearctic.
Behavior: Usually found in small groups coordinated flying in single file. May form flocks of 20 or more individuals.
