Egyptian Vulture
Neophron percnopterus
TR: Kucuk Akbaba

Egyptian vultures are summer visitors of Turkey, and they also breed here. It winters in Africa and India.

The Egyptian Vulture, (Neophron percnopterus) also known as Scavenger Vulture is a small Old World vulture, found from N. Africa to South west Asia. It is the only member of the genus Neophron.

The adult's plumage is black and white. Its facial skin is yellow (it turns orange during nesting periods) and devoid of feathers. The tail is diamond shaped, so it is easily distinguished in flight. The nestlings are dark brown and gradually become light by adulthood at the age of 5.

The adult Egyptian Vulture usually measures 85 cm from the point of the beak to the extremity of the tail and 1.7m between the tips of the wings. It weighs about 2.1 kilograms.

Egyptian Vultures are quite widely distributed and can be found in South Europe, N. Africa, West and South Asia. They are partial migrants, depending on the local climate. If the Egyptian Vulture can endure the local winter it will usually not migrate. It is not well adjusted to cold weather conditions, mainly because of its surface area-volume ratio that causes a quick loss of heat.

Egyptian Vultures are scavengers, mainly feeding off carrion, but they also prey on small mammals and eggs.

Bonsoir Selen
Très belle prise, excellente gestion de l'exposition, couleurs et netteté. Bravo
Amicalement Robi

Hi Selen,
Beautiful in flight capture in wich I love the backlighted tail feathers, light on the head and in the eye of the Vlture very much.
Although sunlight came almost straight from above, you've done a great job on lighting here leaving very nice details at the bottom side of the wings.
Excellent composition with the diagonal line of the wings pointing perfectly towards the lower right and upper left corner of the frame.
The way the bird does stand out against the lovely soft blue color of the sky is beautiful.
Perfect work again.
Thanks for sharing and the good note.
Best wishes and good night.

merhaba Selen hanım,
harika. tek kelimeyle 4/4lük.
Ahmet

Fantastic sharp shot, Selen,
I like the wide open wings and the diagonal arrangement so much, thanks and greetings

Hi Selene,
What a great capture!
I like so much this in flight picture, your timing was excellent.
The light incidence at the head produces very good details there, on the eye and the beak.
Well done and thanks for share it.

Hola Selen,
perfecta captura,
sensacional nitidez y pov,

It is a pretty vulture... compared with our turkey vulture. You manage really nice panning for this shot. the detail and exposure are really good.

Evelynn ; )

You make me so jealous with your great in-flight shot! I wonder what the difference is between our countries as your raptors seem to fly so low. I have seen so many species in Mont-Tremblant National park recently but they were little dots in the sky...

This is beautiful and I'm amazed about the clarity of the details you caught, especially on it head (you even caught a catch-light). This is very well done!

Selen merhaba,
Selamlar. Mustafa

Hi Selen,
Very nice inflight my dear, luv the diagonal comp & POV, just perfect.
Excellent exposure, color, detail, DOF, and a nice shade of blue sky BG too :)
Very well done.

From afar it probably can be mistaken for a stork! Upclose - set the coloration aside it resembles very much our black vulture, with the short tail and stocky body! Wonderful capture and well handled exposure! Cheers, Klaus

Every time I see a shot of an Egytian Vulture, especially one in flight, I wish I could be there to take a similar shot. This is no exception : a very fine sharp image in an excellent diagonal composition with fine lighting. Perhaps one day...
