Lycaena dispar.
Male.

Lycaena dispar (Haworth, 1802)
Lycaena dispar rutila (Werneburg, 1864)

Large Copper
Großer Feuerfalter
Grote vuurvlinder
Dukatvinge
Stor ildfugl
Isokultasiipi
Czerwończyk nieparek
Ohniváčik veľký
Ohniváček černočárný
Manto grande
Grand cuivré

Family: Lycaenidae (Blues)

Wingspan: 32 – 40 mm

The Large Copper is as pretty as its existence is highly endangered with the existence of its genuine habitat of undisturbed wet grassland.

I was lucky to see a few individuals at several locations around Vienna repeatedly during the last years, and also here on TN, Lycaena dispar seems to be a regularly observed butterfly in some parts of its distribution.

Sexes look different. Females' wings are spotted, and their colour is less brightly orange than the males'. The fiery red colour of the males' scales is not achieved by pigments alone but by surface structures. The intensity of colour is enhanced by the contrasting bright blue undersides of underwings. In spite of its colourful appearance, it is hard to follow a flying Large Copper with your eyes. Its unsteady and jumping flight seems to be further disrupted by the very different appearance of its red uppersides and blue undersides of wings.

The female.

The largest one of the red Lycaenids of Europe, the Large Copper is distributed through central and eastern Europe, wide spread, but very local only. Extinct in the UK since about 1850 when its wetland habitat was destroyed, there are small colonies in the Netherlands, in France, Italy, north eastern Germany, Poland, the Baltic states, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, northern Greece, and northern Turkey.

Specimens of subspecies Lycaena dispar rutila (Werneburg, 1864) may be seen in two generations in the eastern parts of Europe: in May and June, and from July to September. That subspecies tends to be smaller in size than subspecies batava from the Netherlands with one generation only in June and July, and the similar but regretfully extinct British nominal race that could reach a wingspan of remarkable 50mm.

Feeding plant is Rumex crispus and other Rumex species.

The location: A small patch of fallow grassland between the vineyards of Perchtoldsdorf south of Vienna.

The camera: SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 17mm macro zoom (equivalent 110mm at full size SLR), F/6.3, 1/200 sec., ISO-125, hand held, no flash. 20.05.2007, 10:16.

Postwork: Photoshop Elements, slightly cropped, resized to web, resharpened, levels slighty adjusted.

Guten Abend Peter,
Peter

Hi, dear Peter.
I like the POV best of all. Excellent view is opening from selected point. Wonderful decoration of the butterfly and fine leaf appear in front of us at full their beauty. Blurred rich green BG humanizes witn colour palette of the main subject perfectly. Lighting, as usual for your works, is unusual and so impressive. Amazing 3D-image of the cute insect at wonderful surroundings by great master. Superb combination. Bravo and warm wishes.

Your composition is wonderfull and I like the POV. The colors just glow!

Hi Peter,

Hi Peter,
You can't stop to amaze me with your ability to crete such artitstic shots.
It's so good the POV and the bright colours got on the insect, specially the bright orange at the top.
Details on the head are so sharp and clear. The DOF worked great with that blurred background.
My compliments and thanks for share it.

Hello Peter,
I have never seen this species myself and would dearly love to photograph it. In the meantime this great shot of the Large Copper is a good compenstation. The POV and pose allows us to see most of the wing surface appearance, both the upper and undersides. The sharpness and DOF are excellent, considering the restriced light availabilty and the composition is of course excellent.
Thanks for sharing this one and enjoy the rest of your Sunday,
Ivan

Amazing shot, Peter,
Very good light. Superb POV and the applied DOF is matching.
Once again, love the light through the coloured wings...
Another great butterfly...

Hello Peter!
Magnificent and detailed work of art, really goo, I have a problem when I shoot these in green BG, green becomes very fluorescent and intrusive how do you avoid this and get suche evem color and light?

Hello Peter Unbelievably beautiful, like a pastel painting. The colors are so delicate, with sumptuous details!
Cheers

It is a pleasure to look at this beautiful specimen of the fast vanishing species of butterflies, Peter.
The three wing segments in view create a lovely symphony of colours and shapes.
Overall, one of the finest butterfly pictures I have seen on TN.
Thanks for sharing it and best regards.

Hi Peter!
It was long ago I was last time in your gallery :)
This is another very nice for watching picture and perfect technicaly photo. Lovely colours and composition (I like this "living on the edge pose of butterfly), very good sharpness and saturation. Note is as always informative and I found a lot of interesting details about ecology and biology of this species.

Hello Peter,
Gorgeous portrait in vivid colours. I like lycaenids a lot - they are perfect object to photograph, by the way the are look and behave. You shot it in a very natural pose showing all details of the underwing, and the colouration of the upper side at the same time. Very nice composition and technique too.

Hello Peter,
Lovely close capture of the Large Copper in a fine composition. Great sharpness and fine colours. Together with the blue butterflies the Large Copper really represent the height of summer to me. Not much colour left now, apart from the autumn leaves!

Hi Peter and sorry for the delay

This is another splendid macro shot from you, my friend and a good news: that this superb species this has some good refugees around Europe. :)
I really like teh close-up level here as well as the magnificent details you present it with - they are so clear and sharp!
The colors are also wonderful and very well saturated and the DOF is very good - keeping the subject in good focus while blurring the BG so well.

bonne netteté et DOF.

Hallo Peter,

Herzlichen Dank!

Mit Besten Gruessen,
Eddie

Simply stunning in every aspect! I especially like the way you have captured the lighting through the wings and the finest of textures in this wonderful little creature. It is beautifully sharp, truly an inspiration.
