Adonis.

Polyommatus bellargus (Rottemburg, 1775)
syn.: adonis (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)

Adonis Blue
Himmelblauer Bläuling
Adonisblauwtje
Kaunosinisiipi
Modraszek adonis
Modráčik ďatelinový
Modrásek jetelový
Niña Celeste Rastrillo
Azuré bleu céleste
Argo celeste

Genus: Polyommatus
Subfamily: Polyommatinae
Family: Lycaenidae

Wing span 30 – 35 mm.

Passing a dry stony meadow on a long walk through the Gailtal Valley in Carinthia, an intensely blue butterfly drew our attention. Its celestial colour, its distinctly black and white fringes on borders of wings, and its larger size made it easy to tell from the common Icarus Blue (Polyommatus icarus) that was sharing its habitat there.

Also sharing this and other similar dry limestone habitats with the closely related, more common, pale silver coloured Chalkhill Blue (Meleageria coridon), the Adonis Blue is a rather rare and threatened species that is reported from the southern parts of Europe including southern England, from Portugal and Spain through France, southern Germany, Austria, Poland to Lithuania, Northern Italy, the Balkan, Northern Greece, Ukraine, Turkey, Irak, Iran, the Caucasian mountains, from the lowlands up to 2000m, never on acid soils but restricted to limestone hills.

There are two generations per year, the first one in May and June, the second one from the end of July to September.

Caterpillars feed on Hyprocrepis comosa, Coronilla varia, hibernating in symbiosys with ants (Lasius niger, Myrmica scabrinoidis etc.). Chrysalises may be found near the entrance of ants’ heaps.

A closer approach will reveal some more of the butterfly's details.

Hello again Peter,
WOW! You have caught one of my favourite butterflies in the best possible way. This fine shot shows the Adonis Blue from a fine POV to show both the wing surfaces with excellent sharpness in a fine composition against a pleasing neutral bokeh.
Great to see and thank you!
Best wishes, Ivan

Hallo Peter,

Anne

Hi Peter.
I don't know which shot is better. Each of them is worthy separate representation. Charming butterfly is reproduced at various surroundings and at different POV so perfectly and with great love to subject. Amazing blue colour is shown with help of excellent light. Details of the texture and coloration are fantastic (but usual for you). Smoothness and colourfulness of the original shot BG are sweet (so pleasant to look and harmonize with blue colour tones nicely). Vegetation and DOF of the WS are tremendous too. But the true pearl of he WS is butterfly tongue and its spiral form. Bravo for so esthetic pleasure which is brought by your both pictures.
Yours Alexei.

hello Peter
This really is exceptional for many reasons..your dof and focus here is absolutley spot on to capture true detail in the upper and lower wings..the pov you have achieved highlights this even more..then the colours and the lighting and so on and so on!!
Excellent work and Thank you very much for sharing this.

Hi Peter, wonderful capture of the Adonis Blue - I like these "Blue" butterflies and never realised there were so many similar but different ones. These wings are quite brilliant, darker than the more pale common one.
Well done

Hi Peter

Another splendid butterfly shot from you my friend!
I don't know if i ever told you, but i really like the way you present these lovely creatures and how and where you found them. I find that very useful in a note so that nyone who might want to experience their beauty live, can go in those kinds of habitats and reach for them.
Now for the picture: it's really very well taken.
I must appreciate the very effective composition - with nothing else but the butterfly and the flower it is on in the frame. A superb uniform BG complements the vivid colors of the subject.
Spot-on exposureas well as sharpness - which is excellent in presenting the smallest details on his body, wings and head.
Great work, my friend!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Peter,
Excellent pose caught!
It's almost like if the butterfly were made acrobatic poses at the top of the dried flower.
The exposure and focus are the right ones to stand out the beauty of this specimen.
I like a lot the smooth gradations of green at the background.
My compliments and thanks for share it.
Best regards,
JM

Guten Abend Peter,
genau getroffen!

Hello Peter,
This is real candy for the eyes as well!! The Adonis Blue is just fabulous, no other blue butterfly can compete with this colour! I hope I'll see it in real life again one day! Excellent capture, very sharp and the colours are beautiful and it stands out so well against the smooth background.
We shouldn't really complain about the weather here in the very south of Sweden as it seems to be much worse both up north and down south! No doubt it'll hit us soon too though.
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Fantastic, vivid colours, amazing sharpness and beautiful contrast between insect and BG make this photo one of the best picture of Lycaenidae in your collection and on TN.
