Clouded Apollo.
Male.

A conspicuously semitransparent butterfly, and a rare sight - this time reported from a mountain meadow right on top of a limestone peak at an elevation of 1247m above sealevel in the Austrian Alps - a single fresh-looking male, seeking shelter in the grass while a dense cloud was covering the sun, allowing me to make a very close approach from maybe 15cm distance.

The Clouded Apollo's colours usually are limited to black and white, but some individuals, usually females, may show some yellow pigments at the base of wings and the body. To decorate its sober appearance, this strictly black and white male individual seems to have put on some purple colour on its furry parts - intensely coloured pollen carried away from some mountain flowers.

Parnassius mnemosyne (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Papilionidae
Subfamily: Parnassiinae

Wingspan 50 - 60 mm

Clouded Apollo, Schwarzer Apollo, Zwarte apollovlinder, Mnemosynefjäril, Pikkuapollo, Juodasis apolonas, Niepylak mnemozyna, Jasoň chochlačkový, Jasoň dymnivkový, Semi-Apollon, Blanca de Asso.

Hello Peter,
You came closer to this Clouded Apollo than I did to mine to show fine details with superb sharpness and a fine DOF, considering the low aperture. Apollos have the habit of burying themselves in a flower as their proboscis is relatively short, which explains the pollen decoration!
Nice composition too.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Best regards,
Ivan

Lieber Peter,
Anne

Amazing close-up!
Such detail! WOW~! I love the way we can see the bits of pollen stuck to the body.

Splendida macro di questa bellissima apollo, stupenda composizione con un POV che permette di apprezzare al massimo la bellezza delle ali, straordinarie nitidezza e definizione dei dettagli, molto belli i colori. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Peter, an other great capture of this splendid butterfly with fantastic details and great sharpness, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Lieber Peter,
Gratuliere!
Beste Grüsse
Dieter

Hi Peter,
When nature and its elements aid you to capture one of its rare creations you do it with great elan and style. What a beautiful presentation of this clouded apollo....it is as if its wings are creamy soft a colour yet crisp like a materila of nice raw silk.I see some evidence of its recent hunts on a pink flower. The details in this composition are simply marvellous. And i have never come across a butterfly having such a "furry body"...very well done, Peter..into my favourites...

TFS & Cheers

Hi, dear Peter.
I am amazed with this masterpiece at highest range. POV and framing, sharpness and details of the butterfly are outstanding. BG cannot be better. Level of details and blurriness is optimal. Soft light is so impressive. My congratulations. Well done.
