Female Clouded Apollo.

Parnassius mnemosyne (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Papilionidae
Subfamily: Parnassiinae

Clouded Apollo, Schwarzer Apollo, Zwarte apollovlinder, Mnemosynefjäril, Pikkuapollo, Juodasis apolonas, Niepylak mnemozyna, Jasoň chochlačkový, Jasoň dymnivkový, Semi-Apollon, Blanca de Asso.

Wingspan 50 - 60 mm

That butterfly was lazily basking in the evening sun.

It was a female after mating.

Parnassians are “northern circumpolar and montane (alpine and Himalayan) butterflies usually known as Apollos. They can vary in colour and form significantly based on their altitude. They also show an adaptation to high altitudes called altitudinal melanism. They show dark bodies and darkened colouration at the wingbase which helps them warm faster using the sun. (...) The Parnassius butterflies also have a peculiar reproductive strategy in that the male has special accessory glands that produce a mating plug or sphragis that seals the female genitalia after mating. This is believed to ensure the success of the male and to prevent other males from mating and avoids sperm competition.“

- cited from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parnassius

The sphragis can be seen quite well here as a sizeable leathery pouch attached to the butterfly’s underside of abdomen.

In 2008, the Clouded Apollo, a rare and endangered species, could gratefully be found in good numbers here in the same location again.

More information about the species.

Hi Peter,
Excellent close up.Details are crisp clear and tack sharp.Exposure,POV,blurred BG,3D effect and composition are perfect.Have a good day too!
THanks for posting.

Coincidental that this particular butterfly, in the way it holds it's wings...looks very much as if it was dressed in the 17th century European garb. An unusual one for sure and one which I have not seen in picture prior. Very well done Peter...good eye!

Lieber Peter,

Hello Peter,
Ths is very well observed! I've never seen a female in this situation before! Excellent capture, very sharp and in beautiful light. A nice soft background and very well composed too.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Peter, splendid butterfly with fantastic details and excellent sharpness, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hallo Peter,

Hi, dear Peter.
Amazing series of the most beautiful specimen. I like how well you have represented it at various POV. Reflection of airiness of the wings, their texture, colours and other fine features are outstanding. Inclined composition and blurriness of the colourful BG complete this masterpiece so amazingly. My hearty wishes and thanks. Well done.

Hello Peter. This is one mastery composition with super sharp image. I can see the translucency of the wings in beautiful markings. Nicely framed with that diagonal blade for the perch. Well presented in full frame(I'm adopting this style now) and thanks so much for sharing. Best regards and have a nice day. Jusni

Hallo Peter !
Vielen Dank !
