An old acquaintance, seen and posted a few times before, but always happy to meet again, and always unexpectedly: Good to find the rare, highly endangered Large Copper every year in some of the meadows in the hills of the Vienna woods, even close to the city of Vienna.

This time I was out on a quick and extendend walk through the woods for reasons of sports much more than any other reason. The day was cloudy, some rain was expected to come as often in May and June of 2008. And it did.

When passing a lonesome meadow I noticed something in the grass beside the path - blinking red in a very bright colour with an enormous contrast against the deep green meadow.

Happy enough the tiny Lumix pocket camera was at hand.

The largest one of the red Lycaenids of Europe, the Large Copper is distributed through central and eastern Europe, wide spread, but very local only. Extinct in the UK since about 1850 when its wetland habitat was destroyed, there are small colonies in the Netherlands, in France, Italy, north eastern Germany, Poland, the Baltic states, in the Vienna Woods of Austria, in Hungary, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, northern Greece, and northern Turkey.

The female.

Subspecies Lycaena dispar rutila (Werneburg, 1864) may be seen in two generations in the eastern parts of Europe: in May and June, and from July to September. That subspecies is smaller in size than subspecies batava from the Netherlands, and the extinct British nominal race.

Feeding plant is Rumex crispus and other Rumex species – and this is all that Lycaena dispar seems to need: dry grassland or wet grassland housing these plants – cut strictly no more than just once a year.

The camera:
Tiny pocket Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FX07, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 5mm wideangle macro zoom setting (equiv. 28mm at conventional 35mm SLR), F/2.8, 1/500 sec., ISO-100; no tripod, no flash; 15.06.2008, 12:14. Very closely approached at rather low light conditions.

Postwork:
Photoshop Elements, cropped, downsized for web presentation, levels slightly adjusted. Any postwork increase in saturation of colours was carefully avoided.

Hallo Peter,

P.S. Ab nächster Woche besuche ich die Mohren!

Hello Peter,
Great capture of a male L. dispar from a POV that lets us enjoy seeing both the upper and under surfaces of the wings. Excellent DOF at only f2.8, which says a lot for a small Lumix compact. You are lucky to have this rare beauty close to Vienna.
Thanks for sharing this delight,
Best wishes, Ivan

Lieber Peter,

Hello Peter!
Long time when I was last time in your gallery, I am sorry :) Too much field work...

This is a very clear, sharp and perfectly coloured picture of Lycaena dispar male. I like a lot that the head is totaly in the focus and the rest of body with delicate out of focus - this makes a very nice perspective :)
As always note is informative and full of interesting details about species.
Best regards from Lodz!
Friendly yours,
Radomir

Splendida macro di questa piccola e bellissima farfalla, ottimi POV e composizione, buona nitidezza nonostante la necessità di una ampia DOF e l'utilizzo del diaframma f2,8, magnifici i colori e BG. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi, dear Peter.
I like perfect use of soft lighting and delicate colours of the nature. Despite the max aperture value you managed to place into focus entire butterfly image. Details as usual for your works are terrific as well as the framing and cropping. Blurred pictorial BG is so fine as main pictured character. Bravo and kind regards.

Hi Peter

Long time no speak :) I hope you are ok, my friend!
This is again a top butterfly macro from you, with an excellent presentation of this beautiful but in some areas endangered species.
The sharpness and DOF of your shot here are terrific and the spot-on exposure made sure you had all the right colors in the scene rendered accurately.
Lovely composition and presentation, as always :)

Bravo and TFS

Hallo Peter!

Markus
