... aka Gull/Mew waiting for its ship to come in...

Not only are gulls smart enough to be musselcrackers - by using Newton's Law - they also appear to have an uncanny ability to figure out which fisherman is throwing guts and heads overboard...

I see fishin' boats coming and going at all times of the day...
The gulls don't miss a one!
When not raiding the fishing boats here is what they do:
Foraging
"Captures prey while walking or swimming, dips food from surface of water. Steals food from other birds. Drops large, hard food items on rock or sand to break them open."
Drinking
"Regularly drinks fresh water when it is available. If none is around, the gull will drink seawater. Special glands located over its eyes allow it to excrete the salt. The salty excretion can be seen dripping out of the gull's nostrils and off the end of its bill."

"What else do they do?" you say... well guess!

This herring gull Larus argentatus is one I tracked in Adanac style... -except I didn't skin my knees - I snuck up on the beastie, for I wanted to get a shot that was a wee closer than from my usual perch, and with a PoV of my chosing. Recently I caught it foraging while swimming...
And before that as a juvenile < or is that a different bird? > in Sambro.

For those who are interested in the seascape here; we have at the horizon
a) to the left, about a third of Inner Sambro Island
b) straight out, Fairweather Rock
c) at the extreme right edge, a wee tip of the Isle of Man...

Hi Jay,
Very good scene here, and your first phrase: waiting for a ride :-)
You had a close approach to the bird, and got clear details on him.
I think this is an excellent compostion, I like very much the mood created with the elements and the light here.
Excellent the wide framing made, kind of panoramic one.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Jay, you have posted many excellent notes, this is no exception. Great PoV and composition! Beautiful gull, looks like he has eaten a tonne of fish already.

Thanks for sharing, regards Tim

Hi Jay,
what a title you have given your latest,humm...My friends and I used a similar name as well that bears no repeating. This presentation is classic:The bird, the seashore and of coarse the rock.Great POV and nice muted colours you have nailed this one pat,and I do like it.Didn't skin your knees or get a hand full of thorns well that is the way to go.Thanks for this one. Bob

Hello Jay,
This is a very nice composition with great low POV. I like to see the large version; very nice. Your notes about them are very interesting as I never realized that they were equipped to drink salted water! Exposure, details and pose of the bird are great! Well done and TFS,

Hi Jay

Another fantastic panorama rom you, my friend!
This is indeed a great shot and the composition is again the main element in my eyes here! The position of the gull (and i don't mean on the rock :))) ) is exceptional and the sharpness yu managed to get on it is magnificent!
Also all the textues and colors on the rock are a great asset to the image, while the perspective is impressive. Even the boat is a great touch (even if it's not a TN element).
All-in-all: splendid work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Jay.- Beatiful PANORAMA of this "Gaviota" waiting for somthing to eat,(or a ship to travel to Mexico) I can see very clear the Islad and the open sea. Nice and warm colors. Your note is very interesting and informative, and new to me. Regards from Mexico. Luis52.
