Wave crashing on Norfolk Island

The the 32-km coastline of Norfolk Island consists, to varying degrees, of cliff faces. There are no safe harbour facilities on Norfolk Island, with loading jetties existing at Kingston and Cascade Bay. Here at Cascade Bay there are only rocks and shingle, and the weather is usually more protected there, and this is where one of the 2 jetty’s on the island is.

This is the sea reaching the shoreline at Cascade Bay. The waves were rough and heavy as they crashed onto the rocks there. We had a fun time evading the waves, and I managed to get quite a few ‘good shots’ of the surf. No, we were quite safe – it was only the odd large wave that broke like this on. We were close to the jetty, and had plenty of roadway to run onto. . .

Norfolk Island is surrounded by cliffs, rising in the north and west to 300 ft. or 400 ft., and elsewhere to the height of 200 ft. The cliffs are slowly eroding away, and the island is now much smaller than it originally was. In most places at the foot of the cliffs there are narrow beaches, usually of shingle.

Hi Janice.
Perfect timing, stopped in it's tracks with great exposure. Makes you feel like you gotta get out of the way.
Wonderful

BANG! I'm all wet :-)))

Hi Janice!

Very dynamic picture I must say! Great 'shapes' of crashed wave, excellent composition of blue and white.

Great action here Janice, the wave can be seen crashing through my monitor...I needed a wake-up this morning! ;-}
Cool shot...So what's the water temp?
I'm wet and very cold at the moment :))
Well done!
Howard

What a good focus Janice. The 1/1600 is right for this stoppage.Wish we had waves this big so I could try for some of these. Doesn't look as impressive with our little ripples.

Hi Janice,
A wonderful photo where the short shutter speed did its job perfectly. You also got some wonderful light to work with. It gave a wonderful shine on the crashing wave and gave you a great blue sky. I love how the wave contrast with the sky and with the black rocks.
TFS,
Niek

P.S. did you end up wet?

The POV is perfect and the sharpness is exemplary, the colours are rich and natural.
Best wishes,
Achim

This is an unusual shot, Janice -- unusual for you and unusual for TN. It really is dynamic and wonderful. Really a stop-action shot. I like the tight crop, too. I wonder why it is so unusual -- it's natural, dynamic, interesting... Hmm, I expect many imitations in the near future.
